Cool & Refreshing Drinks Perfect for Summer

June 12, 2015 2 By EngineerMommy

As the temperatures climb, it’s super important to stay hydrated. I try to teach my kids (and sometimes, my husband, too) how necessary it is to drink water throughout the day, particularly when we are outdoors. And let’s face it- during the Summer, we are outside almost every day for several hours a day!

However, truth be told, everyone gets tired of plain ol’ water from time to time… and that’s okay! It’s perfectly fine and acceptable to hydrate on other beverages as well. In fact, you can add some fix-ins to your water that actually improve the benefits of drinking water! What? Better than just plain water?! Why yes, it is possible. Stick around and check out my summer drink ideas!

Cucumber Lime Water

The first drink is a super healthy & refreshing drink, whose taste will make you feel like you are at the spa getting fancy shmancy hair treatments and massages. If only that were true… right? But anyway, it’s still a great way to spruce up your water game, and throw some variety into your beverage routine. The directions are pretty simple, and you will enjoy this drink on a hot Summer day!

Simply slice a cucumber and add the slices to a pitcher of water. Let that steep for at least a few hours (or overnight if possible). After the steeping time has passed, simply extract your cucumber slices. Squeeze in the juice of half a lime, and garnish with a lime slice. I’ll usually place a lime slice on the rim of my glass, or if it’s in a to-go cup, I’ll just throw a lime slice in there! Easy peasy!

Feel free to sweeten this drink with a touch of Stevia or Splenda or homemade sugar syrup.

This next drink will taste a bit sweeter than the last one, but is still fairly healthy! You can make this drink in one of two ways. You can use a juicer machine to extract the juice from a few cups of chopped watermelon. Alternatively, throw some watermelon in a blender and puree until smooth; then, pass the mixture through a fine sieve to separate the liquid from the solid portion.

Pour the liquid portion into a glass and serve cold. I will often dilute the pure watermelon juice with a little water, so the final drink is not too sweet!! Super refreshing and very delicious!

Blueberry Rosewater Spritzer

This drink is another favorite of mine, because it has a ton of flavor and almost zero calories or sugar! It’s nonetheless a simple recipe with very little prep time. All you need to do is fill a mason jar (or whatever vessel you want to drink out of) with a 50-50 mixture of water and club soda. Then add a small handful of blueberries. They add a bit of interest to the drink, and will infuse a mild berry taste to the water. Also add in about 1/4 tsp. rosewater, which can be purchased in the International food aisle of most major supermarkets. It’s a very strong flavor, so don’t overdo it on the rosewater. A little goes a long way with this stuff, people!

And that’s it for the last drink. It’s a simple recipe, but tastes divine. Again, feel free to sweeten this one a tad if you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side. A touch of honey, agave nectar or sugar syrup will go a long way here.

And there ya have it- three Cool & Refreshing Drinks Perfect for Summer! Hope you found some new drinks to try, and if you’d like to see even more drink options, check out some of my favorites from my archives below!
