DIY sewing kit in jar {gift idea}

July 10, 2015 1 By EngineerMommy

I love glass jars… does anybody else look at a clean, empty glass jar and get excited about the possibilities? Well, I do and I recently repurposed a trio of old glass jars from the kitchen recyclable pile, and made some pretty cool stuff.

This what the jars looked like at the beginning and end of this process:

For one of the jars, I made this terrarium. It’s such a fun, easy craft for kids to participate in. You simply throw some sand, soil, plants and stones into an empty jar. You add a bit of water to it and watch the plant grow. It’s a great lesson for kids and a wonderful beginning gardening project for kids. Here is what the terrarium looked like!

Today’s post will take another jar from my trio of upcycled jars and make it into a basic sewing kit. Let me just start off by saying that I am not really a sew-er. Yes, I own some threads and needles and very basic sewing supplies. But by no means do I take my sewing skills seriously. If you are an expert seamstress, this basic kit probably won’t do you much good. However, you may still want to have one of these basic kits in your car or office or another level of your house, so you can have the supplies necessary for any emergency sewing situations.

Make sure you label the jar “Sewing Kit,” because well, isn’t everything cuter with a little label? This chalkboard label I put on the jar was picked up Dollar Tree!

This is also such a fabulous gift idea! Simply throw some sewing supplies into the jar, label it and slap a bow on front. Add a gift tag with a sweet message and you’re all set to go. What a wonderful little gift for a neighbor, teacher, friend or relative!

So here is what my sewing kit contained: a few small pairs of scissors, various small spools of threads, a bunch of different needle, a thimble or two, etc.
