Painted Animal Silhouette Canvases DIY for Nursery

October 14, 2011 3 By EngineerMommy

These animal silhouette canvases are a perfect DIY project if you have an hour or two to spare. They are perfect for hanging on the wall over a changing table or propping up on a shelf. Here’s how I made mine.

  1. I  bought the three white canvases from Walmart for a few dollars each. Yes, I love Walmart and I love a good value.
  2. I outlined the shape of the animals (elephant, giraffe and lion) lightly with a pencil.
  3. I used watercolors that I already had to paint the interior of the silhouette one color and the exterior another color.
  4. I put small velcro stickers on the four corners of the backside of the canvas for easy hanging on the wall.

Since I am not great at drawing, it took me a few attempts with the pencil to get the silhouette I wanted. Since I was going to paint over all that with the paint, it did not matter much and it still came out looking fabulous. Obviously, I used the colors on the canvas that matched well with the decor of the baby nursery – in our case, earth-tones. And I made all the colors on all three canvases coordinate but not perfectly match. I think this makes it look more sophisticated. And I absolutely love how the watercolor finish is not a perfect single color, but it has slight under- and overtones.
