DIY homemade natural hardwood floor cleaner

April 9, 2014 0 By EngineerMommy

We have two young kids and grandparents that sometimes like to spend the night… or a few nights. My husband wears his shoes inside the house sometimes. My kids bring all kinds of dirt into the house on a regular basis. It’s not so easy to tell an excited two year old to stop and wipe her feet on the mat when she is jumping up for joy because Caillou is about to start and she cannot wait to run into the living room. Suffice it to say that my hardwood floors take quite a beating!

I have tried store-bought products before, but some of them don’t work well as advertised. Others clean the floor well but leave a yucky residue, and with one crawler and one curious two year old, I don’t want any products that leave a residue. I was on a mission to discover a natural, homemade DIY solution that would clean the grime and dirt off my floors and leave them nice and shiny. And I found just the formula that works!

DIY homemade natural hardwood floor cleaner

  • 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 5 drops essential oil (I prefer lavender!)
  • 2-3 cups water (Just fill the rest of the spray bottle with water)

Just add all the ingredients into the spray bottle, shake it up, and start cleaning. The vinegar cuts through the grime and dirt. The alcohol prevents any streakiness. And the essential oil leaves a nice scent behind. I am so in love with this formula.

I will share the pictures of my floor before and after this cleaning. Here is a BEFORE shot.

And here is an AFTER shot. I had a hard time capturing the difference on camera, but notice how shiny and clean the floors are now!

I will next be working on a formula for my tile floors. Stay tuned!
