1. Add board and batten!
Transforming an interior room from builder basic to elegant & chic is easy when you install your own DIY Board & Batten. With just some boards of wood from the home improvement store, some caulk and white paint, you can really make your home look much more sophisticated. We already did this in our hallway last year and we intend on doing something similar in our dining room.

2. Paint the walls!
When it comes to the general feel of a room, nothing makes as big of an impact as some fresh paint. This is the brand we typically use because it offers amazing coverage at a great price. As long as you’re willing to do the painting, you can easily transform a room for under $50 and one afternoon worth of time.

3. Add some chic lighting!
Every room needs lighting so it’s the perfect way to add a bit of pizzazz and style to a room. Whether your style is a modern track light or an art deco chandelier, be sure to incorporate some of your personality into your lighting choices. It’ll make a big difference.

4. Bring in some flowers!
There’s something about fresh flowers in a home that really elevates the space and makes it feel much more elegant. Whether you add some daisies to the bedroom or some roses to the living room, incorporating some flowers in your decor is an easy way to bring the outdoors in!

5. Bring new life to old furniture!
Got an old piece of furniture that has seen better days? Don’t throw it away – just refinish it. We did just that to an older dining table that was getting dingy. We sanded it down, painted it a beautiful blue color and then distressed it along the edges. Get the full tutorial here.

6. Boost the curb appeal!
A home’s curb appeal serves as the first impression of your house. Boost the curb appeal by painting the front door, adding some colorful flowers to the garden, incorporating a welcome sign, and more. I love this welcome mat because it’s colorful and inviting. Here’s how we painted our front door.

7. Dress those windows!
Make sure the window dressings in your home are functional and attractive. I love the way these bamboo shades look. They afford some privacy but still let some sunlight in. I also love the wooden aesthetic they add to the home.

I hope these tips have inspired you. Now, I’d love to hear from you. What is your best tip to boost the value of your home? Do you add chic lighting to your home?

  1. What some great ideas, I love the idea of adding boards and battens that’s such a neat idea to make it look more expensive.

  2. Picking up clutter is also an easy way to make a simple improvement. As is cleaning up debris outside.

  3. I love the idea with some boards of wood.

  4. When you repaint your front door, is it proper to also paint the garage doors the same color?

Thanks for your comment, Ida! I don’t think that’s necessary at all. Our front door is a different color from our garage door.

  5. Love the green door & matching shutters. Funny though how I’m not fond of window shutters but the color definitely works for me around your new green door

  6. So many great tips! We are in the process of buying our first home, and I cannot wait to get started making it our own! Number one on the list? Repainting that front door!

  7. I am happy to see that some of our plans are on here! Lighting and painting our front door/shutters are next on our to do list!

  8. I really liked adding wooden boards to my house! Though I’m not a creative person. I bought few cheaper boards from Burlington Court factory lat year and they all create the signature style to the decor of my home!

I Love to Hear From You!
