Sunscreen Tips for Summer

Around here, the weather is starting to warm up and that means more time spent outdoors. Are you ready to slather on sunscreen? And do you know what level of SPF is recommended? Keep reading for the lowdown on SPF.

How much SPF do I need?

The higher the SPF, the higher the percentage of UVB rays that are blocked. Specifically, SPF 15 blocks 93% of rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of rays, and SPF 50 blocks 98% of rays. No sunscreen can block 100% of rays, but opt for at least SPF 30 every single day. Opt for a higher value if you’re planning on being outdoors for more than an hour or two.

What does broad-spectrum mean?

When it comes to sunscreen, not all types are created equal. Make sure to read the labels and look for phrases such as “broad spectrum,” “multi-spectrum,” or “UVA/UVB protection.” This means that both UVA and UVB rays are being blocked.

How much sunscreen should I apply to my skin?

In general, people apply less than what’s required to achieve the SPF protection that’s listed on the bottle. In general, go for about two teaspoons worth of sunscreen if only your face, arms and neck are exposed. If most of your body is exposed (you’re in a swimsuit,) then go for about two tablespoons worth of sunscreen.

Does sunscreen expire?

Yes, sunscreen does have an expiration date. Be sure to check the “Best Before” date on the bottle to make sure the active ingredients are still effective. If the bottle has been sitting unused for a while, give it a shake to mix it all together.

Where do I need to apply sunscreen?

Any exposed skin should be covered with sunscreen for protection. Some areas that are commonly overlooked include the ears, neck, feet, upper back and the face. Make sure you let the sunscreen dry ~20 minutes before heading outdoors or into the water.
