Cutting board chalkboard wall decor
July 8, 2015During one of my recent trips to the local thrift store, I picked up an old cutting board. I picked it up not entirely sure what I would make with it. I knew I loved the cool shape of this cutting board. I loved that it was wood, and I also loved that it had a small hole near the top so that it can hang on a wall with some twine.
Here is what it looked like when I got it!
And here is how I transformed it:

I flipped it over, because one side had an inset piece of tile, but the other side was plain wood! First, I painted it with some custom green chalkboard paint. It is so simple to make your own chalkboard paint. I wanted to use green because I would hang it in my kitchen, and there’s a lot of green in there already. To make your own custom-color chalkboard paint, check out my post: DIY Custom Color Chalkboard Paint. After I painted it, I let it dry for a good 5-6 hours!
Next, I primed the surface of the chalkboard. This means I took some chalk and drew all over the board with the chalk and then wiped it all away. This got the surface primed and ready to accept chalk drawings!
Finally, I took my trusty chalk marker, and drew on it. I wrote “the kitchen is the heart of the home.”
I also inserted some twine rope into the hole at the top and hung it from a nail right next to the stove!
Doesn’t it look great? I’m loving that I can customize the saying based on the season or holiday!

What a darling idea. I’d have never thought of that, but now all I can think about are the various colors and sayings that could be used. Thanks for feeding my creativity!
I’m the same way… once I get inspired to try something, that is ALL I can think about! 🙂
