How much fun is it to customize things that become part of your home’s decor? I know I absolutely love being able to personalize everything (color, size, shape, pattern, etc.) of decor pieces that become part of my space (and therefore, part of my life!)

I knew I wanted to give my girls a huge chalkboard, so they can practice writing, drawing, and doodling. However, I wasn’t inspired by anything available in stores, so I decided to make a SUPER simple DIY chalkboard for Charlotte’s room! You won’t believe how easy this is!

DIY Chalkboard Paint (custom color)

Supplies:
-hardboard panel (2′ x 4′)
-latex paint color of your choice
-unsanded grout
-paint roller & tray
-screws (to attach board to wall)

Directions:
1. First lay out your hardboard panel on a drop cloth or scrap piece of cardboard.

2. Mix 1 cup of the paint with 2 tbsp. of the unsanded grout in a plastic cup and stir until completely smooth. (Of course, discard the cup and stirrer when done with this project!)

3. Using the tray and roller, start painting your board panel. Make sure to use even, smooth strokes to avoid any inconsistencies in the finish.

4. When complete, I simply attached this board to the wall using 4 screws (one in each corner). I hit studs on the left side of the board, but had to use anchors for the right side. I may add a dab of paint on top of the screw heads (at a later date) to make them disappear more! I may also consider “framing” out the panel with some trim.

For now, my girls love it and are getting a ton of use out of it! So I’m a happy mama!
