5 Ways to Streamline Your Home
February 17, 2017Our everyday lives can be stressful and overwhelming at times. From busy schedules to a never-ending to-do list, I find that it’s very important to regularly simplify my life and streamline my home. From going paperless to using multi-functional sofa beds in my home, keep reading for 5 easy ways to streamline your space – and life – today.
5 Ways to Streamline Your Home
1. De-clutter the rooms:
Nobody likes a messy, cluttered home. For me, I find that when my home is untidy, it definitely takes a toll on my mood and energy. That’s why I try to de-clutter my home on a regular basis. Did the kids leave some toys on the floor? Does the laundry need to be folded and put back in the closets? Did I forget to put away all those crafts from yesterday’s DIY projects? I try to make some time every day to put stuff away. I know it sounds simple, but it goes a long way toward a clean, clutter-free home. In fact, with a cleaning schedule in place, I can easily stay on track with my household chores. In addition to the everyday chores (wiping counters, doing laundry, mopping floors, etc.), I try to take some time every few weeks to really purge unnecessary items in my home. De-cluttering rooms is an important step to streamlining the home.
2. Go paperless:
There’s no question about it. Paper clutter can become overwhelming. From the flyers sent home in my daughter’s backpack every day to the exorbitant amounts of junk mail delivered to our home, we have a lot of paper items entering our home regularly. However, there is a way to drastically reduce the amount of paper mail you receive on a regular basis. Many utility companies, banks, and credit card companies are offering consumers the option to go paperless. What this means is that instead of the company sending you a paper bill in the mail each month, they will e-mail you an electronic bill. Over time, this small change can make a big impact.
3. Create functional “zones”:
Do you make a cup of coffee every morning? Does your evening skincare routine always include the same products? To streamline your home, consider grouping items that you use together regularly. For example, I created a coffee station in my home to organize all the essentials to make the perfect mug of java (sweetener, stirrers, flavored syrups, cinnamon, etc.) Additionally, I created a little skincare station in the master bathroom to keep all my skincare products together (cleanser, toner, serum, cream, etc.) Find ways that you can better organize your stuff. You will save time and effort in the long run.
4. Handle digital clutter: In addition to paper clutter, our computers often become clogged with old pictures, outdated documents, and so much more. Have you ever went to your Pictures folder looking for something in particular, but got frustrated by the lack of organization? Consider taking some time to streamline your digital life, by creating separate folders to group similar pictures or documents together. For my pictures, I like to create separate folders for each year (2014, 2015, 2016,…) Next, within each of the year-folders, I like to create sub-folders that are labeled based on the event (Sophia’s Birthday, Christmas, …) In this way, when I need to search for a picture from Easter of 2013, I know exactly where I can find it.
5. Use multi-purpose furniture: Nothing makes a room feel larger and more streamlined than a minimal amount of furniture. In fact, I have always gravitated toward a minimalist decor style and we have always incorporated sofa beds into our home. (We currently have two sofa beds in the house – one in the playroom and one in the office.) For a wide selection of high-end sofa beds, be sure to check out Modern Digs. I am so bookmarking this! My home is definitely NON streamlined. That’s for sure.
I am into making zones so everyone knows and can find what they need. Love all your ideas.
We need to continue our path to paperless. Those piles of paper are the single most annoying thing to me, especially the mail pile!
I am starting to move today (yay!) so I know all about decluttering! I already have two bags ready for Goodwill and I’m sure there will be more to come too!
I love the idea of creating a “Zone” with stuff you use every day for the same thing. I could do a makeup/skincare zone easily.
I have a little reading zone in my living room. It is a great spot to curl up and read by the fire. I really need to declutter.
I could definitely stand to improve the efficiency in our home. Functional zones are a great idea and I have a fair share of digital clutter to deal with.
These are some great tips that I could really benefit from. My office is getting a bit messy and needs some attention.
I really need to have a week of decluttering around here. I also think making more functional zones would help streamline my home too. Great tips.
I’m all for decluttering! I hate a messy house and actually start feeling depressed if it stays that way too long.
I’m the same way- it really affects my mood if the house is a mess!
We have gone a lot more paperless than what we once were. We used to have bank statements and paycheck stubs lying all around the house. Not anymore. We are still looking to streamline even more.
This is what I like to do. The functional zones are my favorite tip you listed! I like to be able to walk into a room and it be ready for me to do what I need to do.
These are all awesome tips. We’ve been going paperless for a long time and it does help rid us of clutter. That sofa is beautiful and functional! I wish we could go out and buy that right now!
I know. I’m in love with that sofa, too!
it’s amazing how fast a home can add clutter when yo have kids… I feel like it’s an ongoing project every day : ) thanks for the awesome tips, love them!
Love these ideas. Think you, and I will give them a try this week.
Thanks, Ivory!!
getting rid of the tons of papers is my biggest problem. I hate it when they send all the junk mail and advertisements.
These are all such great tips. I prefer a very decluttered home and I am so glad that being “paperless” is now in style. Now I just need to find a way to get my boys to clean up after themselves consistently!
Yes, Amanda- the struggle is real in our house, too! 🙂
If the kids would only pick up after themselves, we’d be all set!
I have a functional zone at my home where hubby and I make cups of coffee in the morning to start the day. WE just recently started drinking coffee again this year.
Definitely bookmarking this! Our home is becoming overly cluttered and we need to streamline it all
