When it comes to cleaning a toilet, routine maintenance is everything! With regular cleaning, the toilet doesn’t have to become one of the most difficult items in the house to keep clean.

Regular cleaning of the toilet does not take a long time. Once a week, simply pour half a cup of white vinegar into the back of the toilet, scrub around the whole inside of the toilet, and let it sit for 45 minutes before flushing. To clean the exterior of the toilet, spray the toilet seat with vinegar and wipe down with a paper towel. This simple trick will keep your toilet clean and disinfected pretty easily.

If you have stubborn stains or odor issues, try using a paste of vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda in the toilet bowl and scrub it with a firm scrub brush really well. Let it sit for an hour before flushing. To clean your scrub brush, wash it well with water, soap and some vinegar regularly. Discard your scrub brush and buy a new one every month.

Another clever trick I’ve learned over the years is that a pumice stone is excellent for scraping off any hard water / lime stains on the interior of the toilet bowl. You can find these pumice stones in the plumbing section (or the nail care section) of a store like Walmart or Target.

You can add some essential oil drops to a spray bottle filled with water and use this solution to deodorize and refresh the air in the bathroom. I like adding drops of the oils of rosemary and lemon to a spray bottle and spraying that on the faucets (sink and bath) in the bathroom. This maintains a pleasant scent in the bathroom – and it’s all natural! No chemicals needed.
