Healthier copycat recipe: Wendy’s chocolate frosty shake
June 9, 2014Have you ever tried the chocolate frosty shake drink from Wendy’s? That drink is amazing! Really amazing!
Of course, it’s not all that healthy. It’s packed with calories and fat and sugar, so the few times I’ve had the Wendy’s frosty drink, I usually feel guilty afterward for ruining my diet for the day. But that doesn’t happen with this next recipe I’m going to share with you. It’s a copycat version of the famous Wendy’s chocolate frosty, but it has a secret ingredient that makes it thick and creamy and rich without any of the dairy elements (whole milk, cream, ice cream, etc.) that usually make these types of creamy drinks so unhealthy.
The secret ingredient that makes the drink thick and delicious is chia seeds.
Chia seeds? What? What are chia seeds and why are they going in my drink? I don’t want seeds in my drink!
Ok, relax, before you reject this idea, just bear with me. When mixed with water, chia seeds grow bigger and form a gelatinous pudding-like texture. When blended in a drink like this, this texture lends to a rich and creamy taste. Chia seeds are also receiving a lot of positive attention recently, as they are full of fiber and protein and are a great, delicious addition to salads, soups, smoothies, casseroles, etc.
Let’s get to the recipe, shall we?

OK, I’m intrigued. I was looking for a dairy free alternative to the frosty, and I’ll admit my reaction to chia seeds is like the one you describe. But, hey, I’m always up for a little culinary adventure, so I’m pinning this one to try once I can get my hands on some chia seeds. Thanks for sharing! (Found you on the Weekend Re-treat.)
Thank you for your comment! It is worth trying- the finished product is definitely rich & creamy! Have a great weekend!
