April 1, 2017 17 By EngineerMommy

The weather is starting to warm up and that means one thing for my family: it’s time to work on the lawn. There’s something about spring that makes me want to focus on our backyard, our plants, and our overall curb appeal. I have done a number of fun backyard projects over the years and there are a lot more that I’d love to complete this year. Check out my list of 7 brilliant backyard projects for spring.

1. Patio Stones
Got a patio? Consider painting some of the patio paver stones a bright color. The vibrant pop of color will put a smile on your face and make your backyard look much more inviting.

2. Front Door
The front door is an important part of the curb appeal of a home. Get rid of the old, boring color and consider painting your front door a color that’s complementary to the rest of your siding. We painted our front door a few years ago and we are still in love with the result.

3. Herb Garden
Whether you like to cook with basil or to add mint to your beverages, having a fully-functional herb garden at home is totally convenient. You can take your herb garden to the next level by installing a multi-tiered raised bed garden in your yard. Alternatively, you can simply plant a few of your fave herbs in pots and place them on your window sill.

4. Kid’s Space
My kids could spend all day outdoors. That’s why we have developed a kid’s space in our backyard. We installed a swing set, along with a sand box and an outdoor playhouse. We even installed an outdoor chalkboard for the kids – they love to draw & create out there.

5. Gazing Ball
Need to break up the monotony of plants and flowers in the yard? Consider adding a gazing ball. You can buy one of these from the home improvement store. Alternatively, this gorgeous sphere can be DIYed with just a few supplies in under an hour. Check out how I made my own gazing ball.

6. Grass Seed
When spending a lot of time outdoors, you probably want your lawn to look its best. If you have bare patches in your lawn, you can easily fill those in by planting grass seed. The process may seem a bit intimidating at first, but really it’s an easy task that any homeowner can accomplish. Check out my tips for planting grass seed. One of my best lawn care tips when planting grass seed is to water frequently.

7. Lighting
We like to consider our backyard an extension of our home. That’s why we have added plenty of lights to our backyard space: spot lights, flood lights, path way lights, string lights and more. It really makes the yard beautiful and functional in the evenings.

I hope these ideas have given you some inspiration on what you can do with your yard this spring.

Now, tell me: Which is your favorite backyard project? How do you make your yard beautiful and functional?
