Home BabyProofing 101: Doors, Windows and Stairways

So, you’ve got a crawler? And you need to keep your baby safe from all the dangers lurking around your home, but don’t know where to start? Our multiple issue guide will help you navigate the waters of how to baby-proof your home effectively and economically.

Let’s start with the obvious: babyproofing doors, windows and stairways.

• If you have glass doors in your home, put sticker decals on them at baby’s eye-level so that baby will not run into them.
• Use doorknob covers on doors that you do not want baby to open.
• Install window guards so windows cannot open more than six inches. Or alternatively, lock all windows that baby has access to.
• Make sure all the cords to blinds are tied up and out of reach so baby cannot get tangled up in them.
• Do not place furniture near windows to prevent child from climbing on furniture to reach the window.
• Install baby safety gates once baby starts crawling. Place the gates at the top and bottom of stairways and on doorways that lead to rooms not safe for baby.
• Make sure the safety gate bar latch on the side away from baby’s reach.
• Always leave the stairs free from clutter to prevent tripping when you are holding baby and walking on the stairs.
