DIY Weed Killer
August 12, 2015One thing about our new house that was not maintained well at all was the lawn! We inherited a ton of weeds and overgrown plants and dead or dying grass. This was something that we overlooked when seeing the house, because well, we toured the house in the Winter (with snow covered on the ground). Oops! But it doesn’t really matter that much to us anyway, because we figure we live inside the house, and we could always spruce up the lawn over time.
So one thing that always bothered me was how the weeds would find a way to grow in between the paver patios in the backyard. In a sense, it made the space feel kinda cozy, but mostly it just felt like a neglected, poorly kept space. So I set out to kill any weeds, grasses or plants that managed to find their way into that area.
As usual, I try to avoid store-bought commercial chemicals. My kids are always in the backyard, and they love to explore. I can’t guarantee that one day, if they drop their cracker on the patio, and my head is turned away for that moment, that they won’t then take that cracker and put it in their mouth. For this reason, I prefer all-natural products inside and around our home. I have found a natural Weed Killer that works fabulously well!
DIY Weed Killer
Ingredients:
2 cups vinegar
1/2 cup salt
a few drops of liquid soap
This is such a simple recipe. Simply throw all these ingredients into a spray bottle. You can add a little water (about 1 cup) to dilute it and it will still work. The soap component helps to keep the solution staying on the leaves. The vinegar and salt work to dry out the leaves and kill the roots. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t spray this on any areas, where you will want growth in the future. Spray this only in areas where you will never want plants to grow again, such as walkways, patios, decks, etc. This works best when you apply it on a hot, Sunny day!
Check out what this DIY Weed Killer did to the weeds? I was pretty impressed!
And see what this walkway looked like before & after treatment!! All I did was spray the walkway and then pull out the wilted, dead plants!

Wow, what a great product! You’re right, it made all the difference- especially on your walkway! Plus your label cracked me up. It looked so menacing!
Thanks Rachel! I love using products that have natural ingredients, because with the kids, I never know when one of them will think a lollipop that fell on the ground is still safe to lick! Ewww
Yes, that label is meant to reflect the menacing power of the solution! Ha! 🙂
It works! I have tried it before 🙂 Thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things and have a great day!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a fabulous day!
Would love to follow your information for do it yourselfers
I have been looking for something safe to spray my gravel strip (aka weedville) that I don’t have to worry about the kids or the dogs getting into. Have you had a problem with the salt running off into your planted areas?

No, I have not had a problem with the solution running off into my planted areas. Just be sure not to use too much solution- a spray bottle works well. Good luck, and thanks for your comment!
What can I use in my flower bed that wont kill my flowers?
If you’re looking for a product that will specifically target weeds but won’t kill flowers/other plants, you might need to turn to a commercial weed kill that states it’s safe on other plants.
