DIY easy terrarium
July 1, 2015This is such a fun little project, perfect for getting little helpers involved! All you need is a mason jar or some old glass jar… say, an old spaghetti sauce jar. This is what I started with: a set of old glass jars that were empty.

I soaked them in some water overnight and then peeled off the labels. I also used some Goo Gone to remove any extra sticky residue from the jars. Then I spray painted the lids black. Here’s what they look like now! Pretty cool, right?

Now, I took one of those jars and made a terriarium with it. It’s so much fun and so fascinating for kids to help out building this little ecosystem in a jar. I know my kids absolutely LOVE going out to the yard and collecting little “treasures!”

So this is how we assembled our little terrarium. First, we tossed some rocks into the bottom of the jar. Next, we added a little sand for drainage purposes. Finally, we added a layer of soil and one tiny plant. We picked a weed, since we figured it would be easy to keep alive! 🙂

I placed a few more stones on top for added interest and dimension. Then I screwed the lid back on. I’m pretty happy with the way this little DIY terrarium looks. All it needs is a tiny bit of water every few weeks. If it looks like it’s fogging up, then take the lid off to let some moisture escape. If you start to notice a funny smell from the jar after a while, you could add a layer of charcoal into the jar to help absorb odors!

This is such a cute little plant to place on a windowsill. I’m keeping one in my office, and my daughter is demanding one to keep in her room. It’s a perfect way to help little kids explore gardening and learn about how plants survive.

My littles are still a bit too small for this one, but this is going to be a great one for their “help” in a year or so. I have vague memories of making something similar in preschool/kindergarten, too.
