DIY Agate Stone Desk

When we decided to upgrade Charlotte’s room, one of the things we needed to focus on was her desk. It was plain wood and it wasn’t inspiring at all. I know with her being in Kindergarten this year, she will be spending some time at her desk. And I want her to love it! Here’s how I transformed her desk from blah to amazing!

The way it turned out was actually a happy accident. I didn’t intend it to look like this from the very beginning, but I am absolutely ecstatic with the way it looks. In fact, I would love to have a desk like this in my very own Babe Cave (aka my office)!

The color palette in her room is orange, pale pink and pale turquoise. So I started out by sanding down her desk a bit to give the paint something to adhere to!

Then I painted half her desk in orange…

and half in pale turquoise. Notice the irregular border between the two colors!

My plan was to originally use painter’s tape to create a sharp line between the two colors and create a color-blocked geometric design. However, when I saw how organic the desk looked with the two colors almost blending together, I fell in love! Instead of creating a sharp contract, I decided to embrace the look. To add a final level of pizzazz, I turned to my gold leaf sheets (I have used them before here). I simply brushed on some glue onto the desk…

applied the gold sheets and brushed away the excess! I love the finished look!

I love the organic look. And I love the combination of the two colors. The desk basically reminds me of an agate stone, so that’s what we’ve been calling it around here!
