Matcha Almond Milk Latte

During the winter, there’s nothing quite as cozy as a big mug of a warm beverage. When it comes to warm beverages, one of my all-time favorites is a rich, flavorful matcha latte. I’ve recently been making them at home using almond milk and DoMatcha Summer Harvest matcha powder – the process is so quick and easy. The result is a rich and earthy beverage… truly my favorite way to start the day!
What exactly is matcha? Well essentially, matcha is the Japanese term for powdered green tea. Speaking of green tea, back in college, I studied the antioxidant content in various brands of green tea. The specific compound I studied is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG,) which falls under the broad class of catechins. Catechins are natural antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals, protecting cells and molecules from damage.
In addition to the high antioxidant and vitamin content, matcha powder offers so many health benefits. I find that a matcha latte helps to promote relaxation and focus, allowing me to concentrate on work in a peaceful state. Unlike the caffeine in coffee that is absorbed quickly, the caffeine in matcha is actually absorbed slowly and steadily. Thanks to the levels of the amino acid L-theanine, matcha provides a calming effect so the overall result is a gentle energy boost.
Preparing a matcha latte is super easy. Simply start by measuring 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of DoMatcha powder.
Add a few ounces of hot water (the perfect temperature is around 176 F.) The ideal way to incorporate the powder is to whisk in a quick zig-zag motion until some green froth appears on the surface. Alternatively, if you don’t have the whisk, you can use a blender or milk frother to create the mixture. For an almond milk latte, I love to use a milk frother and add some hot milk and spoonful of matcha powder.
I find that a milk frother produces the richest, most indulgent foam.
After whisking, add more water or milk as necessary (up to 8oz.) It can be made into a hot beverage or topped over ice for a cold beverage.
