You all know I love a good thrift store makeover. I have been known to make over just about anything from the thrift store… like this, this and this. There’s something so fun and satisfying about taking something old & dingy and bringing it back to life with a little elbow grease & paint.

I have been wanting a new nightstand by my bed for a while. We currently have two of these tables in our master bedroom as nightstands. We picked these up… oh about ten years ago. I originally loved the dainty size and cool shape. However, the tabletop surface was not big enough. I have a lot of stuff I want to keep within reach by my bed… including at least TWO drinks (usually a hot tea & an iced lemon water – yea, I know that’s high maintenance), various hand creams/lotions/serums, my lamp, my jewelry organizer and other random stuff that lands there. See how crowded that is?!

I have been checking out what’s available at the stores when it comes to nightstands and I wasn’t impressed. I couldn’t find the perfect combination of unique shape, right color scheme, spacious tabletop, ample storage and affordable price. I decided making over something from the thrift store might be my best choice. When I spotted this table at the thrift store on a 50% off day, I knew it would be perfect. I loved the legs … is that mid-century modern? I’m not an expert on home design eras but I think I have watched enough HGTV to know a few keywords! 🙂

It was all wooden and I knew that wouldn’t work in my master bedroom. So I started by sanding down all the surfaces: top, bottom, sides.

Next, I whipped out the white eggshell paint and began rolling it on. I put on two coats onto the top, sides and front of the piece. I kept the back original because I’m lazy smart. I kept the legs original because I thought it would add visual interest to the piece.

I also painted the doors of the cabinet portion. Note that these are not cabinet doors that swing open. They are doors that slide left and right. In order to add a bit more interest to this piece, I decided to add a few simple navy blue stripes to the doors. It ties into our navy blue headboard and a few other navy blue accents in the room. I also replaced the original door knobs with chrome ones.

I made a quick trip to Burlington to pick up a few pieces to add to the top surface. I’m feeling a bit self-conscious that maybe the navy blue stripes make this piece look like something fit for a teen boy’s bedroom. So I’m trying to add some glitz and glamour to the tabletop, like the glittery frame, marble decor, and glass vase. I’m even thinking about adding a bit of color to the tabletop too… maybe a small container of pink flowers.

I’m pretty happy with the way it looks… and all the room I have now!!

What do you think about this makeover? Do you think I did a nice job? Should I add some pink decor accents to the top?
