Easy Ways to Simplify your Life in 2018

With the hustle & bustle of everyday life, it can be all too easy to feel like our schedules own us – rather than we own our schedules. Today I’ll be talking about easy – yet effective – ways to take back your time in 2018. From saying “no” more often to relying on convenient meals like Tai Pei Asian Food, keep reading for my best tips that you can start implementing today.

1. Slow down!
Sometimes there can be a tendency to get as much done as quickly as possible. I’m a type-A person so I know this tendency well. However, in the long run, this does not serve you well. By feeling rushed, your stress hormones will rise and over time, you will feel overwhelmed. If you’re the type of person that tends to pack too much in your day, try this exercise the next time you are facing a busy day:

  • Make a list of everything you want to do during the day.
  • Try to cross off at least 1/3 of your list by picking the items that can be pushed back to another day.
  • Experience the day and if you still feel like it was too jam-packed, next time cross off at least 1/2 of your list.

As it turns out, a lot of the items we tell ourselves are necessary are not necessary at all.

2. Keep meals simple!
On a typical day, I am running around from morning until night taking care of errands, running this blog, managing household renovations and more. I like to keep my meals simple and I’ve been really enjoying the delicious convenience of Tai Pei Asian Food.

3. Set up automated reminders!
Do you ever forget to pay those estimated quarterly tax payments? What about replacing the furnace filter? For all those tasks that happen to occur at a set frequency, set automatic reminders on your phone or your computer. Once you set them, you can essentially forget them – that is, until you are reminded to take action. This will free your mind to some extent and let you focus on the more important tasks in the meantime.

4. Say “no” more often!
Many of us want to not disappoint friends, relatives, neighbors, acquaintances, etc. So we might take on more play dates, meetings, get-togethers, etc. than our schedule can really handle. I remember at least a few occasion when I scheduled a play date for my daughters even though I was super busy … just because I didn’t want to disappoint my kids. However, it’s okay to say “no”. In fact, keeping your schedule lean is incredibly freeing. Try it and see for yourself.

5. Do one task at a time!
Multi-tasking has become increasingly popular in recent years. With all the push for improved productivity, I can see why. People want to get more done in less time, and multi-tasking serves as a way to do just that. I have been known to polish my fingernails while catching up with a show AND reading an ebook. Way too much! Doing too much all at once comes with a price – and that price can be a more stressful, complicated day. If you want to simplify your time in 2018, try not to multi-task at every opportunity.

6. Declutter!
We have a lot of stuff but I am constantly working on getting rid of all the excess items I don’t use or need on a regular basis. We have purged about 40% of the items in the garage last weekend and it was incredibly satisfying to see an organized space again in there. One that can actually fit a car! Who knew! When you get rid of the excess clutter and streamline your space, you will find that your mind will feel less cluttered, too.

7. Disconnect from technology!
This is a hard one for so many of us, but finding some time to disconnect from electronics is a great way to simplify your life in the new year. Put your phone down for a full day. Don’t turn on the TV all weekend. Leave your computer in the office for two days. Try it and see how much extra time you will find in your day. It’s remarkable how much simpler our lives can become if we take control of the technology, rather than let it control us.

Do you follow any of these tips above? How do you keep your life simple in 2018? Have you ever tried a Tai Pei entree?
