Tips for Smart Back-to-School Shopping
August 16, 2017This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Boscov’s. All opinions are mine alone.
Just the other day, I was looking through some old photographs of my oldest, Sophia, when she was just a baby. I probably have thousands of photos & dozens of hours of videos of her first year of life… and I cherish every single one of them. My baby is no longer a baby. She is quickly maturing into a school-aged kid, who is developing new interests every single day.
My baby is now excited to try on flavored lip glosses.
My baby now calls herself a “fashion girl” and loves creating cute outfits.
My baby loves creating adorable hairstyles and adding colorful bows to her hair.
My baby is growing up and I am so proud of her. She thrived in kindergarten, making great finds and excelling academically. Now, she is starting first grade. Last weekend, we went shopping at Boscov’s to build her first grade wardrobe and today, I’ll be sharing with you some tips on back-to-school shopping!
1. Shop with a list!
Before you head to the store, be sure to check out what’s already inside your child’s closet at home. Got a ton of short-sleeved shirts? Have an abundance of headbands? Find out what you need before you get to the store, so you can fill in your wardrobe appropriately. By creating a list ahead of time, you can be sure you will not forget anything at the store. Nothing is more frustrating than getting back home to realize that you forgot to pick up a few important wardrobe staples. With a list in hand, you are setting yourself up for a productive, efficient shopping trip.
2. Pick the store wisely!
Dependeing on where you shop can determine how much you spend on a shirt & pair of leggings. I love shopping at Boscov’s because they have great prices on high-quality, brand-name clothing. Plus, in one store, I can pick up everything for my daughter, who’s heading back to school, plus I can find some great items for my husband and myself. The convenience is perfect! You can shop in-store or online and take advantage of their fabulous sales & everyday deals. Did you know there is a all-store Back-to-School event inside Boscov’s stores on August 26, 2017? Be sure to join and check out all the fun!
3. Give your child choices!
Children love having options and picking out back-to-school essentials is no different. When it came to backpacks, I gave Sophia full freedom to pick her favorite one. She got so excited by the prospect and stared at the grand wall of backpacks for a few minutes. Look at the wide selection of adorable options here! Who wouldn’t be excited to pick one of these?
She made her decision and absolutely loves this adorable one that’s covered in candy and ice cream!
4. Stock up on the everyday basics!
When it comes to back-to-school shopping essentials, it’s wise to stock up on everyday clothing staples that can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces. That’s why we love the combination of a pair of leggings with a shirt… or a cute dress with tights. We browsed the Girls section and found such a wonderful selection.
We both fell in love with this Girls (4-6x) Carter’s® 2pc. Peplum Tunic & Leggings Set. I would totally wear it if it came in my size!!
The one piece that really made Sophia jump for joy is this JoJo Siwa T-shirt. She recently started listening to her songs and is a huge fan! In fact, she said that this is going to be part of her outfit on the first day of school. That’s big, folks!
5. Be practical!
The weather can be unpredictable around here, so be sure to have items for cold, rainy & snowy weather. I definitely want to make sure Sophia is prepared for the elements, so when we found these adorable Girls Capelli All Over Emoji Print Rain Boots, we knew we had to add that to our cart. I love the hand-drawn designs and cute sayings on these boots.
6. Don’t forget the accessories!
Whether for an adult or child, accessories make all the difference in the world. My daughter is definitely not shy when it comes to adding accessories to her look! She has an impressive collection of necklaces & bags for a six-year-old. To make sure her back-to-school wardrobe is ready to impress, we picked up a few more gorgeous pieces from Boscov’s. We found this adorable Girls On The Verge Rosette Headband, lip balm pods, and fashion stickers (she totally wants to stick those onto her backpack & jacket)!
She also found these flower hair clips (perfect for adding a little pizzazz to any outfit) and this adorable watch with interchangeable cat & dog faces!
We also found this gorgeous Girls Beanie Boo Journal & Fuzzy Pen. That’s sure to come in handy, as she recently learned how to read & write independently and is creating notes for herself all throughout the house. Now, she’ll have a dedicated spot to store all the cute happenings from first grade!
When we left the store, we couldn’t wait to get home and try on all the outfits.
Once we got home, Sophia got to work putting on a little fashion show for me. Check out some of our favorite outfit combinations that we put together!
I think Sophia is definitely ready for first grade. She has a fabulous wardrobe and plenty of drive to tackle the new school year! I couldn’t be prouder! Don’t forget to join the all-store Back-to-School event inside Boscov’s stores on August 26, 2017! All of the outfits are adorable, as is your little girl. Having a list when shopping always saves me time and money. These tips are great ways to save money when back-to-school shopping.
Yes, a list is always a smart idea!
I am loving your tips, I always go to the store with a list so I can focus otherwise I just spend and spend some more.
These are fantastic tips especially letting the kids choose! My boys are getting older and they are more into choosing what they want to wear! I haven’t even started my back to school shopping yet, I better get on it.
It looks like your child picked out a lot of things that make her happy for her first day of school. My kiddo has to wear uniform so we did not buy any clothes other than uniforms but I let him pick out all the school supplies and that he needed.
Yes, my daughter is super excited about her new wardrobe! She can’t wait for the first day!
Our back to school process is very boring and uneventful. Both of my kids wear uniforms and they are strict down to the socks and shoes.
We do allow them style input on their backpacks but that is the biggest part of their creativity. We shop the school supply list so we aren’t just buying things.
That smile is the sweetest thing ever! You HAVE to have a journal and a fuzzy pen 😉
These are some good tips, the back to school get together can be crazy, trying to remember all the things you need 🙂
Great tips. I always had to tell my daughter to remain practical while back to school shopping.
Great back to school shopping tips! Love all your daughter’s outfit picks. She looks happy with her choices.
Those tips are pretty good! I always go shopping with a list otherwise I would buy everything except for what I have to buy haha
These are great tips! My favorite is stocking up on every day needs. It will make life easier.
Back to school is an exciting time, both for the kid and the mom. I still remember the times as a kid when we used to go to shop for new clothes, books and the works.

My daughter isn’t in school yet but I will be remembering these for when the time comes!
Well, she’s just darned adorable with her toothless little grin! The list is probably the most important thing because little girls are SO MUCH FUN to shop for!! Secondly is stock up on those basics…it might not be there when you find the last pair of leggings torn, you know?
