Pumpkin Flavored Treats for Dogs
October 2, 2017This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Rover. All opinions are mine alone.
As I’ve said before here and here, fall is definitely my favorite season. What’s not to love? The cooler air, the cozy slippers, and pumpkin spice everywhere… it all puts a smile on my face. This year, as you celebrate everything that is special about fall, don’t forget about your dogs – you can make fall exciting for them, too!
Here are some fabulous ways to encourage your pup embrace the spirit of the season:
1. Play in the leaves!
Just like kids, dogs are curious by the colors & textures of crisp fall leaves. Create a nice pile of leaves and invite your dog to explore and play with the leaves. As always, make sure your dogs are protected against fleas & ticks with a product that is appropriate for their breed & age. To make the leaf activity even more exciting, bring one of your dog’s fave toys (like a squeaky toy) and bury it under the leaves – let your dog find it!
2. Go for long walks!
During the fall, there’s nothing better than enjoying some fresh air with your furbaby. Go for long walks around the neighborhood together. In fact, for dog lovers, becoming a dog sitter or dog walker can be a very lucrative side business. Did you know that Rover is the nation’s largest network of pet sitters and dog walkers? 3. Serve pumpkin treats!
Did you know that pumpkin is just as healthy for canines as it is for humans? For amazing recipe inspiration, including how to make such fun recipes as Pumpkin Apple Doggie Mint Treats & Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Ice Cream, check out these DIY Pumpkin Treats for Dogs.
Here are some basic dog treats you can make at home:
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup canned pumpkin
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- 2. Whisk together flour, eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter. Roll the dough & cut into small pieces.
- 3. Bake for about 45 minutes until hard.
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 3/4 cup applesauce
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- 2. Whisk together all ingredients and fill a muffin tray about 2/3 full.
- 3. Bake for about 20 minutes until firm and set on the interior.
4. Trick or treat!
Is there anything cuter than a dog in a costume? Get your dog dressed up for Halloween and bring him along as you trick-or-treat with the kids. Your furry friend is sure to be the hit of the neighborhood! Check out the Rover blog for more inspiration on fun activities you can do your pet this year.
5. Snuggle indoors!
When the weather gets cooler, I really enjoy snuggling in my comfiest pajamas, brewing a mug of hot chocolate and cuddling up with my favorite magazine. This fall, invite your furbaby to cuddle alongside you on the couch and just relax together. It’s a great bonding experience.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. Do you love spending time outdoors with your pet? Would you like to be a dog sitter with Rover? Have you ever baked a pumpkin treat for your furbaby? How do you make the season special for your pet?

These all sound like fun treat ideas. We don’t have a dog anymore, but I am sure he would have loved a pumpkin flavored treat!
I know a few people that make their own dog treats, and I even know one that will occasionally eat one. Your dog looks too cute in that costume.
Our dog loves to play in the leaves. Just yesterday, we took a hike through some wooded trails and he had a blast.
These do sound like fun things to do with your dog! I only have cats, and they don’t like to do much but eat 😉
Even our fur babies can get into the halloween festivities with these pumpkin treats just for them. Fun idea.
I did not know dogs could eat pumpkin too! I will have to share the pup-cakes recipe with my cousin, she has three dogs and I bet they would love it!
I think my dog would love these. I love to spoil my dog so I think I will make these because I know it is definitely a good treat, and it is probably cheaper than the stuff in the stores.
Those pumpkin treats sound like they are perfect for poochies, I know mine used to love playing in the leaves as well – she’s getting on now but still gets her moments.
Will share this with my SIL as she loves giving her dogs lovely treats and this is right up her alley
I have always heard that pumpkin is really good for dogs. I bet my dogs would love these homemade pumpkin dog treats.
I have been wanting to try making my dogs some homemade treats. This recipe looks easy to make. I will have to get the ingredients I need to make some this weekend.
I don’t have a pet so I’ve never made any treats. We’ve been in talks about getting a dog so these are things we can and would do with our pet. I would love a cute little dog like yours.
What great news. I would have never thought that doggy treats could be pumpkin flavored. I love this 🙂
It’s great that we can make our dogs feel special with some extra attention and treats! I’m liking the pumpkin treat recipe!
I wish our dog would learn to love treats. He does not want treats because they are hard. I even have to soak his kibble or else he won’t eat it! I wills hare this dog treat recipe with my sister. Her dog is such a big treat fan.
Fall is my favorite time of the year as well. I don’t have a dog but if I did dressing them up for Halloween is an absolute must. They look so cute.
I have a friend who’s dogs love pumpkin. I have no doubt she would be elated over these.
My dog goes crazy over peanut butter but I’ve never given him pumpkin. To mix it in with Peanut butter would guarantee he’d eat it. I didn’t think about it being healthy for dogs too.
Wow I didn’t know dogs can eat pumpkin. My dogs would love these treats!
