DIY Backyard Chalkboard

We love a good backyard project. We have done many different upgrades to our backyard since we moved in. Some of my favorite ones are the garden globe, the outdoor racetrack and the crib rails planter. Today, I am sharing the simple tutorial of how I set up an outdoor chalkboard. The kids have been getting a lot of use out of this chalkboard!
We started out with a Wonderboard Lite from the home improvement store. This is simply a cement backerboard. It’s intended to be used as the base for laying tiles. However, I like that it’s waterproof so it’s perfect for outdoor use.
I mixed up my homemade chalkboard recipe. I’ve used it before when making this chalkboard in the kid’s bedroom.
After mixing up the color, I simply brushed it onto one side of the cement backer board.
I also wanted to create a quasi-frame for this so that when it’s hanging on the fence, it looks a bit more complete. I grabbed some 1x2s and cut them to the height of the backerboard. I painted them in a complementary color.
Then I simply screwed the wooden pieces right to the backerboard. Here it is sitting in our dining room. (The kids couldn’t wait to start drawing on it.)
To hang it outdoors, we simply screwed it right into our wooden fence in several spots. We used a level to make sure it is even.
We are loving the way it came out. If you want to add a chalkboard to your backyard, this is easiest and cheapest way to do it. I believe this whole project was less than $20!
