The cold weather is definitely upon us. Just yesterday, we had temperatures in the 20’s and we received a few inches of snow on the ground! My kids really love the snow and enjoy going outside to make snowmen, but I know that with the cold weather usually comes colds and coughs. I have so many memories of my mom taking care of me when I got sick as a child. And now that I have two young daughters, I love helping them quickly get over a cold, too. A few days ago, my older daughter, Sophia (4 years old), was dealing with a cold. From homemade chicken noodle soup to Vicks VapoRub, I gave her all the comforts that I know will nurture her back to health quickly!

My mom always used to take such good care of me when I was a young child. I actually remember one cold in particular. I must have been about 7 years old. I had a really bad cold with a very persistent cough. It was hard to sleep at night. My mom stayed with me in my room all night, because I was sick. I remember the chicken noodle soup she used to make from scratch- it had huge chunks of chicken and a ton of veggies! And since my cough was really bothersome, she used to apply Vicks VapoRub to my chest & throat. And it always helped soothe me and calm my cough so that I can get a good night’s rest. To this day, I have fond memories of that familiar scent of Vicks VapoRub and how it really helps relieve a cough!

That’s why when my 4 year old recently got sick, I implemented many of the same techniques to help her recover and feel better quickly.

I made a big batch of chicken noodle soup. It’s good for the stomach and the soul!

I love giving her some warm tea. I usually add a bit of honey & lemon in there and she loves to drink it up using a straw.

I apply Vicks VapoRub to her chest and throat. It’s a topical cough suppressant with medicated vapors that works for the entire family (intended for anyone 2 years old or older). It helps to relieve a cough due to minor throat & bronchial irritation associated with the common cold. Whenever I apply Vicks VapoRub on her, I usually remind her that even her favorite cartoon characters get “sick” sometimes! And then, we usually read one of her favorite bedtime stories together from her little library.

I really like that it provides soothing cough relief that works right away! And unlike other cough medicines, it is not likely to cause drowsiness when used as directed. Vicks VapoRub is actually the #1 Pediatrician Recommended Rub to help with stubborn coughs.

The ingredients in Vicks VapoRub include camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol, which all work together to soothe a cough and relieve minor aches & pains.

I also do a lot of cuddling with her. She loves to sit on the sofa with a warm throw and hug her favorite stuffed animal. I usually sit with her and we’ll watch one of her favorite movies on DVD. A little extra cuddling time with Mom always helps her feel better!
