Craft a personalized blackboard door sign
July 27, 2014Did you know that Walmart sells small blackboard signs in their School Supplies section for under $2 bucks? I found out that nifty little factoid the last time I was perusing the Stationery section of the store. There were a bunch of different blackboard signs available and I was quite impressed with the selection and of course, the price point- it is Walmart, after all.
I was looking for a new sign to hang on the door to the kids’ room. I had previously had these scrapbook paper and sticker embellished wooden letters attached to the door, but I needed equal representation for both kids now. I previously only had one girl’s name spelled out, and now I needed something for both of them!
The perfect solution for me was to pick up one of the blackboard door signs for just under $2 and use multi-colored chalk to decorate the sign. Bonus: It would be easy to erase and change the message or the drawing to reflect the season or my mood!
Craft a personal blackboard door sign
So here is the plain sign as I picked it up from Walmart – just a thin, wooden rectangle covered in a blackboard finish with a nice rope hanging.
I grabbed all of my daughter’s chalk colors (Shhhh! Don’t tell!) and went to town! I drew a banner because, well, doesn’t everything look more festive with a banner?! I wrote out their names. I even used some glittery butterfly washi tape that I picked up from Hobby Lobby on clearance and used that to add further interest to the sign.
To hang up the sign, I did something a bit unconventional, I guess. I used an over-the-door hook from Dollar Tree- you know, the ones used to hang a robe in the bathroom. I hung the sign on that hook and then I covered up the hook part with a big sunflower (also from Dollar Tree). I think their door looks pretty cool and I can’t wait to change up the sign in a few months when I get tired of the current look!
