Colorful Salt Art: a craft for kids
July 4, 2014This colorful salt art craft for kids is a perfect boredom buster for those days when you’re stuck in the house and need to keep the little ones entertained! The only supplies needed are probably already in your house right now.
This is a fun little kids’ project, where salt is used as an abrasive element to shave tiny pieces of chalk and create different colored powders. Then these colored powders can be stacked in a small clear (glass or plastic) cup. Obviously, don’t hand a glass cup to your young child but it can still be displayed on a high shelf for pretty spring-color-themed décor. Either way, when kids do artwork, it’s all about the process anyway, not the finished product.
Let’s get to the tutorial now, shall we?
Colorful Salt Art: a craft for kids
Supplies:
- table salt
- different colored chalk
- clear cup to display
Directions:
- Pour out a small amount (1/4 cup) salt onto a scrap piece of paper.
- Press the chalk into the salt and move it around in circular motions. Adjust the pressure so that tiny shavings of chalk break off into the salt pile. Keep going until you reach the desired color intensity.
- Funnel the salt & chalk mixture into the cup.
- Start over with another pile of salt and a different colored chalk and repeat.
