Interactive Kid’s Education that Moms Can Feel Great About

August 15, 2015 4 By EngineerMommy

I love nothing more than sitting down and playing with my kids, but sometimes, to be honest, life gets in the way! I have to make dinner or clean up a mess or do something else that keeps me occupied- and I need to give my kids an activity that will keep them entertained for a little while. We all need that help from time to time! I recently discovered Speakaboos, and everyone in this house is very excited about it!

I recently had the fabulous opportunity to experience a membership to Speakaboos, which is a subscription-based service that offers a digital library of 175+ interactive, educational stories & songs! This award-winning program was developed by the same team that developed such popular kid’s programs as Blue’s Clues, SuperWHY! and NickJr. The Speakaboos platform is available on iOS, Android and desktop, so your kids can learn even when you’re on the go! The content is super engaging and caters to children aged 2-7. And after trying it with my girls, I can tell you that their storybooks feature rich illustrations, captivating characters, plot-driven games and touch-screen interactions!

My kids were completely enthralled with pretty much every story we tried (and we tried a lot of them!)

Some of the stories were so interactive, and when the story asked a question, my 2-year old would point at the screen. She was completely following along and being engaged in an educational way! Mama is happy about that!

My 4-year old was able to use a touch pad to select items on the screen. (When did she learn to use a touch pad? Kids grow up so fast! Slow down, Sophia!) One of our favorite stories was “Robot and the Princess,” in which the story plot is based on the user’s input of data. For example, at one point, the Robot asks the child to select a character to ask a question to: the Prince, the Owl or the Mean Queen? Then, Sophia would select one answer (by clicking on that character on the screen) and the story would move forward and take into account her selection! She loved this interactivity. It gave her a great satisfaction to be able to control the story. She also learned about Cause & Effect and Problem Solving. She wanted to repeat the story many times, testing out the different outcomes of her selections!

I love that this program is available on many different platforms, so I downloaded it to my iPhone. The other day, we were running around town taking care of errands, and at one point, we had to wait about 15 minutes for an appointment, but I was able to let her watch an episode of one of her favorite songs from the program: “The La-La-La Song.” After watching this only a few times, Sophia started singing along. To be honest, so did I! Ha! It’s a very catchy song, and it’s also so engaging, as it features little ballerinas and teaches basic ballerina poses! (I think Sophia wants to dress up like a ballerina for Halloween!)

Another thing I want to mention is how well organized the website is, and how easy it is to find a particular song or story. You can filter by almost any category imaginable, such as type, genre, theme, educational concept, character, lexile measure, mode and story length! You’ll be able to find what you’re looking for in no time!

Being a chemical engineer myself, I wanted to check out all the Science-based stories. I was able to easily filter the Educational Concepts down to only the Science ones. There are so many great opportunities for learning here! There are educational books on bugs, dinosaurs, animals and so much more. I love letting them watch one of these, and then discussing the scientific concepts covered within the story book!

Speakaboos also features some of the super popular characters from your favorite TV shows, including Sid the Science Kid, Angelina Ballerina and Thomas & Friends. We watched a bunch of episodes of Sid the Science Kid through the app, and they have the same look & feel as the show- except they are more interactive and free of commercials!!

I also wanted to mention that Speakaboos is a philanthropic company that gives back to the community! Through the First Book charitable organization, they are providing up to $3 million of their award-winning platform for free to teachers serving kids in need! That’s such an honorable initiative!

Whatever your child’s interests (from princesses to robots to animals), Speakaboos has a book that your child will love! If you’re interested to try it out for yourself, you can sign up for a free 7-day trial of their program here . If you’re ready to join, a Speakaboos membership is really affordable at only $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year! Definitely worth it to expose your child to an amazing variety of high-quality, educational and interactive stories and songs!

Now, it’s giveaway time! The generous folks at Speakaboos are giving one of my readers a FREE membership to Speakaboos for a whole year!!
