Yes, I am fully aware that cleaning walls is hardly the most exciting topic of the year! Cleaning walls can be sorta boring and mundane, but it is a necessity if you have young kids or pets, are selling your house, or are having guests over for a party. So whether your walls are painted with latex paint or oil-based paint, I have some useful tips to get your walls looking their best in no time flat!

Walls with Latex Paint

If your walls are painted with latex paint, use some warm water and nonabrasive all-purpose cleaner. Rub the walls, paying special attention at any troublesome areas. Rinse with a clean cloth and clear water.

If you have stubborn spots/stains, make a little paste of baking soda and water. Then rub this area until the dirt comes off. You can also use a mixture of white vinegar & water to dissolve any grease stains. Alternatively, you could use some rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth.

Walls with Oil Based Paint

If your walls are painted with oil-based paint, use the following homemade solution to clean the walls. Combine a few drops of liquid dish detergent with a cup of water and 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar. Wipe away the stain.

Here are some more great tips for cleaning your walls:

  • Don’t apply too much soap to a wall. The residue will attract dirt.

  • Keep in mind that baby wipes will remove many wall messes without water or detergent!

  • If you’re using any new products, it’s a good idea to test it first in a small area to make sure it doesn’t cause any permanent staining.

  • When all else fails, a Magic Eraser will usually remove any dirt or debris from walls!

I know washing your walls is probably not the most exciting way to spend your afternoon, but if you need your home to look its best, it’s a necessary chore. And if it’s a necessary chore, you might as well make sure you are not wasting your time with ineffective methods.
