Stress Relief Tips for Parents

Are you looking for some great Stress Relief Tips for Parents? I’ve got them here!

If you’re a busy parent out there, you will most likely find yourself stressed out at one point or another! We all get it… that feeling of being overwhelmed and anxious. It’s not a pleasant feeling and it’s one that if not addressed promptly, could quickly escalate into a bigger problem.

After my second daughter was born, I was definitely feeling stress & anxiety for months afterward. I think a big part of the problem for me was the transition from 1 kid to 2 kids. It was a big change. All of a sudden, two kids needed my immediate attention, and it seemed like there wasn’t enough time in the day (or in the hour) to take care of all the tasks I needed to tackle. Luckily, this feeling got better over time and I soon learned to better manage the responsibilities of multiple children. Moreover, I learned to better manage my anxiety and develop better mechanisms to cope with stress – and even figure out ways to combat that feeling of helplessness.

First, let’s look at some of the common symptoms of feeling stressed or anxious:

Symptoms of Stress/Anxiety:

  • increased illness
  • increased use of alcohol and caffeine
  • disturbances in sleep patterns
  • weight loss
  • inability to focus/concentrate
  • inability to relax
  • having a short temper with loved ones

Ways to Reduce & Manage Stress

  • Set aside time for relaxing everyday.

Whether it is a quiet bath or reading a book, make sure you set aside a block of time every day (or a few times a day) for just resting and relaxing. Even if it doesn’t feel natural, force it – eventually, you will feel comfortable being at peace.

  • Develop a support network of family, friends, colleagues, etc.

Make sure you get out of the house each day and interact with other people. This was a big one for me postpartum. I needed that adult interaction and just being able to chat for a few minutes with the barista at Starbucks was helpful and a pleasant distraction from diapers & tantrums!

  • Start a hobby.

Whether you enjoy collecting cards, scrapbooking, writing, reading, etc., make sure you spend time doing something you enjoy. It is fulfilling and enjoyable to engage in a fun hobby, especially if you have a friend or relative who can do that hobby with you.

  • Exercise everyday.

Make sure you get at least 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity most days of the week. It stimulates the happy hormones that result in good moods. And of course, it’s super healthy for your heart, too!

  • Drink tea.

This was a big one for me. I personally love tea. I love the ritual of tea-making and I love sipping on a cup of hot tea. Flavors like chamomile are often associated with feelings of relaxation and happiness. I recently received two tea bags of Celestial Seasonings Decaf Candy Cane Lane Green Tea, and they taste wonderful! I received it complimentary from @Influenster in my #FrostyVoxBox & I love the flavor of candy cane for the month of December. It’s so perfect! It tastes like a candy cane – kinda like peppermint with a sweet note! Even though the flavor is not intrinsically relaxing, the act of sipping tea is relaxing. And I can’t think of a more perfect flavor for December than Candy Cane Lane! #CelestialTea

  • Keep the clutter away.

Often if a space is overly cluttered, the mind will get cluttered. At least I’ve noticed that with myself. When my room and home is neat & tidy, I’m usually in a better mood and can better focus on the tasks at hand. When everything is a big mess, it sometimes becomes an overwhelming situation, where I don’t know what to tackle first. So I usually try to keep the clutter from building up in the first place.

I hope you’ve found some useful tips on learning to relax and better manage stress in your life. Busy parents are so easily transformed into stressed-out parents, but with some basic stress relief tips, this doesn’t have to be the case. You can tackle life’s challenges effectively and successfully without letting stress get the better of you.
