Cleaning up your windowsills
October 8, 2014Do your windowsills look fabulous? Mine do now, but they didn’t last week before I spruced them up. We are trying to sell our house, so we are completely focused on cleaning things up and making them look their best. And our windowsills were not looking their best last week! Dirt, dust, water spots, cracked caulk, and peeling paint all made the windowsill look worn & tired. Check them out!
So I got scrubbing, painting and caulking the sills and now they gleam and look perfect! This is important because even if a potential home buyer didn’t notice the sills during a home showing, a home inspector would likely notice the cracked caulk during an inspection. Now, everything is fixed and back to great condition! Here is how I did it!
Cleaning up your windowsills
- Scrubbing: The window sills had water spots, dust and random debris on them, so I used a plastic scrub brush and cleaned up the whole sill.
- De-caulking: Next, I used one of these little gadgetsto peel up all the old caulk. Wipe down the windowsill from caulk shards. Easy peasy.
- Painting: I always have a bunch of interior white trim paint around the house for quick touch-up jobs like this, so I grabbed a can and a medium foam brush and painted away. I didn’t use any painter’s tape to protect my area, but I was careful and went slowly.
- Re-caulking: Finally, I used a caulk gun to apply fresh caulk to the seam and used a caulk spreader toolto make it look professional, though I hear that a finger tip could also do the trick.
