Make fabric-wrapped decorative letters out of foam board: dollar store craft

I’m in the middle of sprucing up the play room. I’ve already made this story book gallery wall, this DIY bird wall art, a DIY stuffed animal display/organizer (post coming soon) and a large farm felt board (post coming in a few days).

The play room makes me happy. It has a ton of fun & colorful toys. There are pink and red accents all over the room. My girls love spending time in the play room. It’s a fun, cheerful place all around!

I wanted to add some decorative letters on the wall above the DIY bird wall art, because the room has really high ceilings. I debated which word to go with… I was undecided between the girls’ names or the word PLAY. I went with the single word PLAY because it is simple and straightforward. And it’s a short word so that means less work for me! 😉

At the craft store, four decorative wooden letters of this size would add up to about ten dollars. Not bad, but I knew I could do better. Well, I wound up doing a lot better! I put this project together for one buck. Only one buckaroo! Thanks again, Dollar Tree! Let’s get to the tutorial, shall we?

Make fabric-wrapped decorative letters out of foam board: dollar store craft

Supplies Needed:

  • one foam board
  • fabric
  • hot glue & glue gun
  • utility knife
  • ruler

Project Tutorial:

    • Lay out the font size and style in your word processing program. Find interesting fonts for free from sites like 1001fonts.com and dafont.com. *Tip: Select a font with simple lines to make the cutting step easier. Fonts with fancy, curved lines are generally not suitable for this project. (Alternatively, you could freehand the letters).
    • Print out your letters. I used one letter per page so the letters would be as big as possible. Adjust the size of your letters for your project.
    • Place your cut letters on top of the foam board and trace the letters onto the foam board.

    • Using the utility knife, cut the letters out of the foam board. Don’t worry about perfection here. Most small flaws along the edges of the letters will disappear when the letters are covered in fabric.

    • Place pieces of fabric that are slightly larger than each letter on top of each letter. Start wrapping. Using hot glue, secure the fabric to the back side of the foam letters.

  • Hang the letters on the wall using mounting pads (or heavy-duty tape or double-sided tape). These are light so they should stay put!

I love my little decorative word. I had the pink and red chevron fabric lying around the house, so this project rang in at a grand total of ONE dollar! I didn’t cut out the centers of the letters P and A. It looks more playful and festive this way. And again, it’s less work for me!  🙂
