5 Practical Tips for Better Indoor Air
September 28, 2018This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Lennox. All opinions are 100% mine.
This is a very busy time of the year! Everyone is getting into a new routine as the kids head back to school. Plus, with Fall practically upon us, it’s a good time to make sure the home is ready for the cooler months ahead. During this hectic time of transition, the last thing I want to worry about is the air we’re breathing at home. That’s why I have invested in smart home technology that keeps the air in our home fresh & clean. Today I’ll be sharing some practical tips you can implement to improve your indoor air quality, from installing the PureAir™ S system from Lennox (find a dealer near you) to adding the right plants to your home and more!
Ever heard of indoor air quality? This is a new topic in the sphere of environmental safety that has been receiving a lot of attention recently – and for good reason! Indoor air quality is a measure of the level of pollutants in the air inside a home, but keep in mind that humidity and ventilation play into the equation too. Did you know that according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the levels of pollutants can be up to 100 times higher indoors than outdoors? That’s an alarming statistic, isn’t it? Moreover, the American Lung Association states that most people spend 90% of their time inside, so you can imagine why homeowners are paying attention to their indoor air quality nowadays. Curious about your own indoor air quality? Some ways to improve your indoor air include: getting a whole-home Lennox system, keeping humidity at the right levels, changing HVAC filters, adding plants to the home, and checking for drafts. Let’s take a closer look at each of these tips!
1. Get a whole-home Lennox® system! When we think about the technology that powers our homes, we tend to think about things like the Wi-Fi router and the television. We seldom think about those devices that play an essential role in our comfort & our ability to breathe clean, fresh air. Lennox offers Air Purification systems to keep the home running smoothly for everyone. When it comes to a simple solution for better indoor air, Lennox is a smart, easy choice. My younger daughter, Charlotte, has suffered from seasonal allergies for years so I’m always trying to improve the air in our home. By the way, she starts Kindergarten this year and is super excited about her big girl desk! Lennox offers multiple solutions for cleaner indoor air. The PureAir™ S system can clean the air inside your home better than other single systems on the market today. Most single-area systems clean the air in one room only so they are not tackling the contamination that travels throughout the home. The PureAir™ S is a smart whole-home solution that addresses all of the air inside your home. A system like that is efficient and thorough gives me peace of mind! After all, as the weather cools off, we are spending a lot of time indoors. Another differentiating factor between Lennox systems and the competitors involve exactly what is filtered out. Many systems on the market today filter out particles. While some focus on germs, others focus on odors. Only PureAir™ S Air Purification System tackles all three types of indoor air pollutants: airborne particles, germs / bacteria, and chemical odors / vapors. That means the air will be cleaner and purer- learn more! By the way, just like Charlotte, my husband also suffers from allergies. That’s why breathing clean air inside our home is very important to us. In addition to air purification systems, Lennox also offers other technology to make your home more comfortable. A smart thermostat, such as iComfort® smart thermostat, automates and simplifies your comfort at home, while saving money at the same time. A multi-zone system, such as iHarmony, helps to streamline the control of different regions of the home via one simplified interface. By the way, smart devices (like the iComfort S30 and iComfort E30 Thermostats, for example) are compatible with Apple HomeKit, which facilitates control of the home’s lights, doors, thermostat and more all from one single interface via any iPhone, iPad or Apple watch. Just imagine… from your phone, you can change thermostat setpoints, change thermostat mode (heat, cool, off, auto), check the thermostat status, and more. I love the simplicity of that! As Fall rolls around, be sure to check out Lennox systems to improve your indoor air quality and get your home ready for the cooler months ahead. Find a dealer near you here.
2. Keep humidity at the right level! When it comes to humidity, the right level is everything! Too much or too little humidity will have negative consequences on the indoor air quality in your home. The most important thing to keep in mind is not to let moisture build up. When cooking or bathing, be sure to turn on fans to get rid of the added humidity. Make sure there are no water leaks in your home. Consider investing in a water leak detector – this smart device can sense a leaking pipe and alert your phone right away, potentially saving you thousands in water damage. I have one in our laundry room and it gives me peace of mind knowing that it’s constantly monitoring for water leaks.
3. Change HVAC filters at the recommended time intervals! The HVAC filters are an essential component of indoor air quality. Make sure you check the manufacturer’s guidelines on how frequently the filters should be replaced. Set a recurring alarm on your phone or computer to remind you every 3 months (or more, based on manufacturer recommendations) to replace it. Also, it may be wise to have your HVAC ducts professionally cleaned on a regular basis to keep the air circulating in your home as clean as possible. Find a dealer near you.
4. Add plants to your home! Did you know that there are certain plants that can improve indoor air quality? Some plants are famous for removing harmful chemicals from the air and pumping out fresh oxygen. The availability of these plants varies based on geographic region, but some names to look for during your next visit to the nursery include Bamboo Palm, English Ivy, Pot Mum and Peace Lily.
5. Check for drafts! Before the coldest months of the year roll around, check for drafts and leaky windows/doors. If you spot any cracks, fill them with caulk. Consider installing window insulation film on the windows/doors with the worst leaks. I have personally installed this plastic shrink film on multiple windows in the past and those windows are air-tight now!
