DIY Purple Hexagon Desk

When we decided to upgrade Charlotte’s room from nursery to big-kid-room, Sophia demanded that we spruce up her space, too. Who could blame her? So we decided to transform Sophia’s Monster High themed room into a Parisian-inspired kid’s bedroom. I will be sharing various projects we did in her room over the next week or two, but today I’m going to talk about her desk!

Her desk was a basic white desk from Ikea… not more than $30. We picked it up years ago but it was plain and boring. We wanted to give it a bit more character and interest. Her new room is going to feature pale pink, purple, and silver as primary colors.

For her desk, we decided to get rid of the bright, in-your-face turquoise and replace it with a bright white. It’s a clean slate!! Next, I used the hexagon stencil like this one to dab on little hexagons across the top of the desk.

Once one section is done, move the stencil over and keep painting. Make sure you line up the hexagons so it looks continuous!

Make sure you use the right brush for this step. A stippling brush like this one works best. I also liked the look of the hexagons NOT being filled in perfectly, but sorta looking a bit distressed! So I was very light-handed with the purple paint.

To add a bit of glamour, I added some gold leaf to some of the hexagons. I simply brushed on some glue, placed a gold sheet on top and brushed away the excess.

A final coat of polyurethane sealed my hard work and will keep this desk looking good for a while… at least I hope! Let’s face it… kids can be pretty messy with art supplies!! Here is the finished desk!
