When it comes to making a great first impression, nothing is as important as fabulous skin. Unfortunately, I deal with acne on a regular basis. The good news is that I’m starting a new skincare routine today and I’m really optimistic about the results. During a recent trip to Walmart, I picked up new Differin® Gel 45g tube. It’s actually the first and only prescription-strength retinoid that’s available over the counter for clearing and preventing acne. In fact, this product represents the newest innovation and ingredient in the OTC acne category over the past 30 years!
To organize my everyday bathroom essentials, including my Differin® Gel, I decided to make a set of DIY Apothecary Jars. This quick, easy project is a great way to repurpose old glass jars that might have otherwise ended up in the trash. By cleaning out the jars, painting the lids, and attaching some crystal knobs, you can create an elegant set of bathroom organizers that are both practical and attractive. Ready to see a sneak peek of my jars?
DIY Apothecary Jars
Let’s get right to the tutorial now, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
- old glass jars
- coconut oil (to remove stubborn adhesive)
- gold spray paint
- crystal knobs
- hot glue or high-strength adhesive
- labels (optional)
I found this jar of tomato sauce that had expired in the fridge. Rather than throw it out, I decided to up-cycle it for this project.
To completely clean the jar, I soaked it for a few hours in some hot, soapy water. This made it fairly easy to remove the majority of the label. For any stubborn, leftover adhesive, simply rub some coconut oil directly onto the jar – it will help break down the remaining glue.
I actually repeated this procedure for two more glass jars: an old jar of artichokes and an old jar of olives. I like the look of different-sized jars, but if you prefer, you can create a set of three identical jars for this project.
Now, it’s time to turn our attention to the lids. To make them look uniform, I simply spray-painted them all gold.
*Tip: When spray painting, always use multiple thinner coats (rather than one thicker coat) to ensure even coverage and minimal drips.
Now, it’s time to add the crystal knobs to the lids. I used hot glue to attach one knob to the center of each lid. Alternatively, you can also use high-strength adhesive for this step.
Labels always make my heart sing, so I decided to whip up some simple labels for these jars. I used my handy dandy label maker to create the following labels: Cotton Balls, Cotton Swabs and Differin® Gel. I like to keep my bathroom counter top mostly clutter-free, but these jars are so attractive, and I know I will be using their contents every day.
*Tip: If you don’t have a label maker, you can simply write the contents of each jar on a strip of washi tape.
I’m so excited about how these jars turned out, and I’m so excited to try Differin® Gel. Designed to reduce & prevent acne, this gel used to be available only with a doctor’s prescription. Now it’s available over the counter. In fact, Differin® Gel contains Adapalene, which is recommended by dermatologists across the country to battle acne-prone skin. To complement Differin® Gel, I also picked up Differin® Balancing Moisturizer from Walmart.
What I love most about Differin® Gel is that it actually clears breakouts right where they start: deep within the pores. It also prevents breakouts before they can even start. As a result, skin’s texture & tone are improved.
*Note: Please use caution when using Differin® Gel with more than one acne treatment or glycolic acid product because this could lead to irritation. Even after your skin appears clear, you should continue using Differin® Gel as part of your skincare routine.
Unlike spot treatments that are only applied directly to breakouts, a thin layer of Differin® Gel should be applied all over the face once every day. The tube conveniently dispenses a clear-white gel that is easy to spread onto the skin.
I have never had perfectly clear skin. Even now as an adult, I deal with hormonal acne that seems to come in cycles. I find that the skin on my cheeks tends to break out. Not having clear skin can be so frustrating, and even with some makeup, the acne & poor skin texture shows through! I will be starting Differin® Gel today and then sharing my experiences in a follow-up post after about eight weeks!
When using Differin® Gel, it’s so important to cleanse and moisturize the face every day. That’s why I recently purchased Differin® Balancing Moisturizer from Walmart. I want to make sure my skin is well-hydrated throughout the treatment phase.
I absolutely love the way my DIY Apothecary Jars turned out. Don’t they look chic?
In my bathroom, I find that these jars really add a lovely, elegant touch to the space.
