Are you conscientious about your carbon footprint? In my household, we have been trying to make some simple changes to be more environmentally friendly. After all, we want future generations to benefit from everything that this planet has to offer. From choosing reusable water bottles to switching to Scott Tube-Free Tissue, keep reading to see how we are making a positive impact today.

Here are some easy ways we are trying to go green:

• We use cloth napkins. By avoiding disposable napkins, we are putting less waste into the landfills.
• We started a compost pile. By saving all those food scraps, we are both nourishing our garden and keeping outgoing food waste to a minimum.
• We use reusable water bottles and drink tap water. Tap water is delicious, readily available and free! Our reusable bottle is made of glass and doesn’t produce any waste whatsoever.
• We installed a low-flow shower head. This simple change saves so much water – and money – over the course of a year for our whole family.
• We unplug all our devices and appliances when not in use. Did you know that appliances will drain power from the outlet even when they’re turned off? By unplugging them, you can reduce the so-called phantom power.
• We use a drying rack to dry our clothing. By minimizing use of the dryer, we save so much energy and money each time we do the laundry.
• We use Scott Tube-Free Tissue. These toilet paper rolls have no cardboard tube, so they are a smarter option that’s soft, affordable, and eco-friendly.

These are just some of the changes we have made recently in our everyday life. We absolutely love the switch to tube-free toilet paper rolls, because we don’t even notice the difference on a daily basis but we’re still making a big difference in the big picture. To make sure we never run out of toilet paper in our bathroom, I made a DIY Copper Toilet Paper Holder using copper pipes! Want to see how it came out?

DIY Copper Toilet Paper Holder

It was a fun project that came together in under an hour! If you’d like to try this project yourself, here’s what you’ll need:

• 1/2″ copper pipe, 6 foot length
• three 1/2″ 90-degree copper pipe elbows
• two 1/2″ copper pipe end caps
• pipe cutter
• wrench

Start by cutting the copper pipe into the following lengths:
1 piece: 18″ length
3 pieces: 4″ length
The pipe cutter is a little tool that you can find in any home improvement store. It makes it so simple to make clean cuts in the copper pipe. I use my wrench to increase the torque available, which makes this job even easier!

Use two of the elbows and the three 4″ pipes to form a “C” shape, as in the picture below.

Then, take the final 90-degree elbow and place it on one end of the “C” shape, pointing upwards.

Insert the 18″ pipe into the opening of the 90-degree elbow. Do you see how the shape of the toilet paper holder is coming together?

Finally, place the end caps on both ends of the toilet paper holder to make the whole thing look a bit more finished! I absolutely love the way this project came out! I didn’t use adhesive on any of the joints, because all the fittings were quite snug. If you prefer, you could add a few dabs of high-strength adhesive on all the joint fittings.
