We’ve all heard the old adage that eyes are the windows to the soul, along with the associated need to define the eyes with precise makeup application. However, did you know that eyebrows play a crucial role in framing (and giving definition to) the face? Whether you’re working with thick, bushy brows or thinner, more angled ones, following some sensible guidelines can help you make the most of your brow game! Check out my tips & tricks for better brows and let me know if I missed anything.
1. Short strokes are best!
Use short, hair-like strokes to fill in your brows. A single, heavy-handed stroke of brow product is almost certainly guaranteed to look unnatural and harsh. Whether you’re using a brow pencil (I love this one,) brow powder (this one works well) or brow mascara, remember that short strokes are always the way to go!
2. Aim for a natural shape!
If you try to re-create a completely different brow shape from what you were born with, it will likely appear fake. Instead, evaluate the natural shape of your brows and go with that, fine-tuning it slightly as desired. Tweeze any stray hairs that fall outside this general shape. Avoid a sharp arch, as this often leads the face to appear surprised or angry. For a general guideline on where the arch should appear, hold a pencil diagonally from your nostril to the center of your eye. Where this pencil hits your brow is exactly where the arch should be naturally. This pair of tweezers works well … plus, the pink color is just pure perfection.
3. Don’t go for a long tail.
An eyebrow that’s extended too far out tends to bring the face down, giving you a sad look. There is a simple trick for figuring out where the brow should naturally end. Hold a pencil diagonally from your nostril to the side of your eye. Where the pencil hits your brow is where the brow should end.
4. Brush hairs upward and outward.
If you’ve seen any magazine covers recently, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the popular trend of thick, bushy eyebrows brushed up. Use a spoolie-type eyebrow brush and some hair gel to recreate this effect. If you want a more subtle everyday version of this look, skip the gel and just brush into place.
5. Take care of sparse spots.
Many of us tweezed our brows a little too heavy-handedly during our teen years. The result? Bare spots in our brows that are completely unsightly! The best remedy is to fill in these spots using a brow powder and an angled brush.
6. Use concealer or highlight right under the brows.
For extra definition to your brows, consider applying a dab of concealer or highlighter right underneath your brows. It will brighten up the area and create a more finished overall look.
7. Start with clean eyebrows.
Begin with a clean slate. To keep the skin under and around your eyebrows in good shape, be sure to wash with a facial cleanser every evening before bed, especially if you’re applying product to your brows regularly. If you’re struggling with too-thin brows, consider an eyebrow serum that can promote extra hair growth. Also, think about putting down the tweezers for 1-2 months to let your brows grow in fully. Then you can create a more refined shape once you have enough eyebrow hair in place.
