Smart Moving Tips To Save You Time & Money
September 14, 2016This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of U-Pack. All opinions are 100% mine.
We recently moved with two young kids. Yes, it was a bit stressful at times, but I definitely learned some tips & tricks along the way to make any future moves smooth & successful! Today, I’m sharing some of my best packing tips for a successful move with you. From using colored tape on your boxes to utilizing a moving service like U-Pack, keep reading for easy ways to make your next move stress-free!
Smart Moving Tips To Save You Time & Money
1. Donate unwanted stuff: Before packing for any move, it’s prudent to go through one’s belongings and purge any unwanted items. You can donate gently-worn clothing to a local shelter. You can simply throw away items that are past their useful lifespan. After spending just a few minutes looking through my daughter’s drawers, I found a bunch of clothing items that she has outgrown!
2. Plan meals for last weeks: During the last two weeks before the big move, don’t plan on doing any grocery shopping. Instead, use the last two weeks to consume any foods you already have in your freezer, pantry, etc. Make a schedule that outlines what you’ll eat on each day. The goal is to use up the remaining food items in your current house.
3. Measure everything: A measuring tape is your best friend. Measure everything to make sure it will fit properly in the new space. Nobody wants to move furniture (or buy furniture) only to find out that it does not fit in the new house.
4. Utilize U-Pack moving service: One of the best ways to save time and money on moving cross country is by using the services of U-Pack.
The way it works is simple:
- Your empty moving container or moving trailer is delivered to your home..
- You have up to 3 business days to load.
- U-Pack drives your stuff to your new place in your new city.
- You unload the moving equipment. Easy peasy!
This is a great way to save money when moving, because you pay only for the space you need! There are no hidden fees. Compare moving options today and see for yourself why U-Pack is a more affordable alternative to a full-service moving company.

5. Use colored tape: When packing the house for a move, I always like to use colored tape to help distinguish the contents of different boxes. I’ll designate one color (like orange, for example) for all boxes related to the kitchen. This way, when it’s time to unpack, it’s quick to glance at a box and know right away which room it belongs in!
6. Store wires neatly: Nobody wants to arrive at their destination to find a big tangled mess of wires and cables. However, don’t purchase expensive cable organizers for this purpose. Simply re-purpose a toilet paper roll to store and organize electronic cables. You can even label the rolls with the name of the wire.
7. Prevent breakage of cosmetics: Moving can sometimes rattle the contents of boxes. Keep your expensive cosmetic compacts safe during transport by simply placing a cotton pad inside. The extra cushion will prevent breakage during the move!
8. Avoid spills: Transporting a lot of bottles of liquids? Here’s how you can avoid a spill. Use a small square of clear plastic wrap and place it over the bottle opening before screwing the cap on. The plastic wrap will help make sure that the liquids stay where they need to stay – inside the bottle!
9. Take time to decompress: Even with all these tips, moving can be a little overwhelming. Make sure you take time at the end of the day to focus on yourself. Simply place a relaxing eye mask over your eyes and take a bath to decompress. Writing in a journal at the end of the day can also help to process one’s thoughts & emotions.
I hope these tips have helped you prepare for your upcoming move!
