A few weeks ago, my girls and I were playing in the backyard when my 5 year old started collecting some rocks and stones. She told me she wanted to paint them! We decided that it would be a lot of fun if we could place them back outside after they were painted. So we decided to paint the stones to look like bugs! It was such a fun little project that my girls really had a lot of fun with!
This is a perfect way to spark a child’s imagination and also let them have fun in a creative way!

Here’s what you’ll need:
acrylic paints in various colors
waterproofing spray
googly eyes
paint brushes
stones or rocks of various sizes and shapes
Here’s how this little project comes together:
1. Start by gathering your stones. It’s best to use a wide variety of sizes and shapes.
2. Pour a small dollop of acrylic paint into a paper plate and paint each of your stones with a single color. I only painted the top side, since the bottom side will be facing the ground and more prone to water damage!
3. Next, paint a small triangular section on each of the stones with black paint. This will be represent the bug’s head. Now, flip your paintbrush over and use the bristle-free side to add black polka dots all over the bug’s body!
4. Let dry fully!
5. Finally, add some googly eyes with a bit of hot glue and liberally spray with a few coats of waterproofing spray!
These have been a big hit in our yard. Everyone loves these little guys!
