The holiday season is approaching quickly. I’ve already started shopping for a few people (I like to get a head start) and I even started planning out my holiday menu. When it comes to recipes, I love to put my own spin on things! This year, I will be serving rich, decadent Red Velvet Cake Shakes made with the creamy taste of the new Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half.
Red Velvet Cake Shakes
I grew up enjoying red velvet cake during the holiday season. I remember helping my mom mix the batter in the kitchen. We would chat & laugh and whip up the most delicious cakes together. There was something so simple and special about that bonding time I shared with her as a kid. It has always been one of my fondest memories of my childhood. So I knew I definitely wanted to incorporate red velvet cake into my holiday dessert menu this year, but I wanted to get creative!
Instead of baking a big cake for my holiday party, I will be preparing and serving individual dessert glasses filled with all the delicious flavors of a red velvet cake- in shake form! I love that Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half has all the simple goodness of half & half with a super decadent blend of real milk and cream. It really imparts such a fabulous flavor and creaminess to these shakes. If you enjoy the flavor of red velvet cake and love the fun-ness of a shake, you have to try this recipe this holiday season!
To prepare these shakes, start by gathering the ingredients you’ll need: Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half, red velvet cake mix, milk, sugar, vanilla ice cream, and vanilla extract. Red food coloring is an optional extra ingredient to deepen the color of these shakes (I used only one drop).
Place all the ingredients into a blender or food processor.
Blend until smooth throughout.
Here’s a trick to make the glasses super fun and festive. Drizzle some chocolate syrup in a random pattern on the interior of the glass. This is what it will look like.
Then simply pour the blended shakes into each glass. Look at how fun and festive these babies are! I love the contrast of the black chocolate syrup with the red shake!
A dollop of whipped cream and a few chocolate chips on top completes the look! Do these look delicious or what? These shakes are totally reminiscent of everything I love about a red velvet cake. Plus, it’s super fun to drink dessert!
This holiday season, I will be making a big batch of these shakes… one for each guest. Want to really impress your guests at your next gathering? Skip the big sheet cake this year and serve these cake shakes instead! It will look like you went above & beyond, but it really was a pretty simple recipe!
These shakes are the perfect combination of creamy Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half, sweet vanilla ice cream, and classic red velvet cake.
With Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half in these shakes, experience indulgence done right! If you make these shakes once, I promise you’ll be making them again … and again. We’ve already made them twice last week!
With Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half on hand, you will even be taking your morning cup of coffee to the next level. Experience the ultimate, perfect mug of java with the creamy taste of his half & half.
A few weeks ago, during my weekly trip to Walmart, I found Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half and was excited to try it. I’m so excited I picked it up! Look for it in the dairy aisle of your local Walmart.
Here’s the detailed recipe. You can print this out for future reference.

Our Elf on the Shelf is pretty sweet and often makes treats for the kids. These red velvet shakes would be so fun with some green sprinkles to match the colors of Christmas. I’ll have to mention them to the elf.

I have not tried making a milkshake using Land O’Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half. I will have to add that to my grocery list this week.
The red velvet cake shake looks tempting indeed. Food and cooking have so much more to it, it has so many great memories. As you mention you spent time with your mom while making the cakes and I am sure you will always treasure those memories.
