DIY Painted Door Mat
August 13, 2015Hey, friends! I have an easy tutorial to share with you all today. The last time I was walking through Dollar Tree, I came across a bunch of door mats. They had different colors: green, black and gray, I believe. I picked up one in green, and figured for $1, I’d find something to do with this to spruce it up a bit!
And I sure did manage to bring it to life! I love my new DIY Door Mat. It was such an easy project, and really adds a little fun to our back patio!
DIY Painted Door Mat
So, here is what the door mat looked like when I brought it home!
Here is what I used to spruce it up!
Supplies:
door mat
painter’s tape
white spray paint (suitable for outdoor use)
Directions:
First, I laid down the tape in the pattern I wanted. I created a series of diagonal stripes (of varying widths.) And then I also used the tape to write out the word “HOME” diagonally.
I spray painted this a few times. As always, it is best to use spray paint in multiple lighter coats. The painter’s tape started to peel up as the paint dried a bit, but as you’ll see in the next picture, it didn’t really affect the final product.
Once dried, I removed the tape. I’m happy with those sharp lines. Gotta love painter’s tape!
How much fun is this? I’m loving my new door mat!
I placed it on the back patio, and placed some of my brightest, colorful plants beside it.
Yep, I’m smiling from ear to ear when I use that door now!

The more i see on your blog the more i want to spend lots of time just reading and seeing what you have been up to and how you do it. You sure inspire me to get off my duff and get busy. Been hanging out doing nothing much (except for cleaning house and being on here too much). Been in bit of slump this summer,no ambition to tackle projects. Sure enjoy your blog and projects. Happy weekend
That Door Mat had been sitting in the garage for days, and I didn’t know what to do with it at first. And then, it hit me. Why not spray paint it? I love the way it turned out. Thanks so much for your kind words, JaneEllen!
This turned out really nicely! What inspired you to pick the white paint? I love it!
Thanks, Rachel! I picked the white paint, because I wanted a light color to stand out against the dark green background. Oh, and it’s also what I had at home at the time! 😉
Have a wonderful weekend!
Hi from Tampa! I loved your post. I made hand painted floormats from artists canvas all through my kids time in elementary school for thier school auctions. So much fun! I never thought to use a doormat like this – great idea!
With a smile, carlyn 🙂
