5 Brilliant Smart Home Gadgets

There’s no doubt about my love for smart home gadgets. I’ve talked about them here on the blog before and over the years, we have amassed quite the collection of devices that make our lives easier & streamline our everyday experience. Today I’ll be sharing five of my favorite ones, including both items we already own and ones that are on our wish list.

1. Smart Water Leak Detector

When it comes to keeping track of water usage in the home, nothing beats Flume. This smart detector simply wraps around the water meter, identifying potential leaks and monitoring water usage 24/7. Once synced to your smartphone, Flume will send a push notification to alert you to any leaks or non-ideal usage trends- whether you’re home or thousands of miles away. While other devices on the market only track sprinkler system water usage, Flume is the first of its kind to monitor usage inside as well as outside in your lawn or garden. Talk about putting the power in your hands!

Did you know that one running toilet can waste up to 70K gallons of water per year? What a shocking statistic! With Flume, there’s peace of mind in knowing that any leaks will be identified quickly. What I really appreciate about Flume is that it can be installed in mere minutes and doesn’t require any plumbing work. In fact, the built-in technology has actually been approved through partnerships with water utility companies across the country.

There’s no doubt about it: small leaks can turn into big problems! In our previous residence, we actually had a fairly major water leak. The condensate line of our HVAC unit began leaking; it was located on the top floor of our 3-story townhouse. The water leaked down to the second floor. The result was thousands of dollars in repairs, having to be relocated to a hotel for a week, and more stress than anyone would want. Honestly, we still don’t know exactly how long the leak had been going on when we actually discovered it. Had we installed Flume onto our water meter, we would have been notified right away that there was a problem. We could have taken immediate action to minimize the damage caused. Flume is indeed a smart investment for any homeowner.

2. Smart Speaker

A smart speaker can be quite a convenient addition to the home. We have smart speakers in practically every room of the house, including the kitchen, master bedroom, office, and both kids’ bedrooms. They are useful not only for playing music on command, but also for converting recipe quantities, checking the weather, looking up random facts, and so much more. Plus, there are many models available to choose from, including ones designed especially for children and ones with a built-in touchscreen.

3. Smart Thermostat

I’ve talked about my love for our smart thermostat on the blog before. It has completely streamlined our control of the climate in our house. Of course, it’s easy to set programs according to the day of the week and the hour of the day. However, it can do so much more than that. Since it’s connected to WiFi, it can automatically set the temperature to different levels based on my proximity to home (via my phone’s precise location.) So if I’m out of town, it will automatically switch to “Away” mode, but the minute I enter a 10 mile radius (for example) of my home, it will automatically switch to “Home” mode.

4. Smart Doorbell

This has been a fairly recent addition to our home, but honestly I’m not sure why we waited so long to switch to a smart doorbell. I love that I can instantly see who is at my front door, whether I’m in my backyard or on vacation 2000 miles away. Using my phone app, I can even talk to the visitor in real-time.

5. Smart Plug

A smart plug can basically turn any electronic device into a smart device. Once you sync the smart plug to the corresponding app on your phone, you can control when the device turns on or off automatically. If you also have a smart speaker in your home that’s compatible with the smart plug, it then becomes possible to control the device with the power of your voice! I have to admit that the kids really do enjoy saying, “Alexa, turn off the living room lamp!”

Don’t forget to learn more about Flume and these other smart home devices. Do you worry about water usage in your home? Would you like to experience the peace of mind of a water leak detector in your home?
