1. Find a good flow!
We’ve all been there… working at a high efficiency totally immersed in our work and then a text message interrupts us. Or maybe it was that jarring notification bell of a new email that distracts you. Finding a good work flow is essential. Whether you’re writing a blog post, cleaning the house, or making dinner, getting into a groove will help boost your productivity and get more work done in less time. So when you’re trying to focus on getting work done, make sure you turn off all distractions. Put the phone away. Don’t check your social media channels. 3. Automate everything!
Technology plays such a big role in our lives every day so there’s no reason not to let it work to your advantage! When it comes to streamlining your day, look for ways to automate things you do on a regular basis. Can’t remember when was the last time you changed that furnace filter? Set an automatic reminder on your computer every 3 months (or at the frequency indicated by your furnace manual) to remind you to replace the filter. Don’t want to run out of paper towels or toilet paper or canned goods? Set up subscription deliveries of these household items at a regular schedule so you never run out. Instead of constantly fiddling with your thermostat, get a smart one that will work on a pre-set schedule and even take into account when you’re home and when you’re away (based on the location of your smart phone).
4. Take breaks!
Taking a break from your work is a smart way to keep your focus level up. If you sit down and try to tackle one project for 4 hours straight, you will most likely hit a wall and lose focus. Prepare a quick, convenient snack (like hummus with crackers) for fueling between meals. Plan breaks regularly to stretch your legs and clear your mind. Head to the garden and sip on a hot coffee. 5. Clear your head before bed!
It has happened multiple times. I am lying in bed trying to get comfortable and fall asleep but I can’t stop thinking about everything I have to do the next day: pick up groceries, clean the bathrooms, visit friend for play date, work on tax return, etc. When our minds are bogged down by pending tasks, we cannot relax and unwind properly. Our sleep will be affected, which will then in turn affect our work flow the next day. The solution is to clear your head before you go to bed. Simply keeping a journal or notebook by your bed and writing a list of things to be done the next day can help. Once the tasks are on paper (and off your mind!), you will be able to rest your mind properly.
6. Go paperless!
From incoming junk mail to documents from the kid’s school, a lot of papers enter our home on a regular basis. However, all those papers take up valuable space and can be difficult to organize. Going paperless means you are getting rid of all paper documents and switching everything to a digital format. Set up an account with your health insurance so you will get EOB’s (Explanation of Benefits) via email. Create an online account with your banks, mortgage company & credit cards so all statements will be provided digitally. Scan the kid’s artwork and store in labeled folders on an external hard drive. Don’t forget to shred all documents with sensitive information (name, address, social security number, etc.)
7. Work in Bulk!
If I am working on two posts in one day, I usually try to take all my pictures (for both posts) at once. Then I will sit down and write both posts back to back. I find that if I group my tasks in this way, I am more efficient and my brain can focus on finding a good flow for a longer time. The same philosophy applies to other tasks, such as cooking. Consider setting aside some time on Sundays and do some bulk cooking for the week. Prepare lunch solutions, easy breakfast ideas and portable snacks all at once. When you bulk together similar tasks, you can get more done in less time. Even taking care of errands can be more efficient when you bulk together similar items. Run all your errands together (bank, dry cleaners, supermarket, etc.) all at once in the morning for speed and efficiency.
