Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

November 16, 2014 2 By EngineerMommy

Who knew you could make your own Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix?! I never realized that taco seasoning mix purchased at the supermarket could be easily recreated at home, thereby controlling the amount of salt, spice and heat in the final product – perfect!

I love being able to customize things like the amount of spiciness in the finished Taco Seasoning Mix. My young girls – Sophia aged 3 years and Charlotte aged 16 months – don’t like spicy things, so being able to make a Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix that is not spicy at all for them is fabulous. They both love Mexican food, so being able to flavor foods with this mix is perfect for our family. Of course, if you love things uber-spicy, like my husband, you could add more chili powder and kick up the spiciness factor!

I may or may not have made a few different Taco Seasoning Mixes – one labelled for the kids and one labelled for me & Hubby! 🙂  I told you I love customizing things like this!

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsbp. chili powder *
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes *
  • 1/4 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 2 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. sea salt

*The ingredients labelled with an asterisk (*) are the ones that will make this taco seasoning mix spicier. So if you love food that burns your tongue, then add more of those ingredients. If you are preparing a batch of this mix for little kids – or anyone that doesn’t like spicy food – then simply omit the asterisked ingredients.

Simply mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl and store in a small, airtight container. A fabulous place to store this would be an old spice jar or an old spice container.
