Felt cupcakes: DIY play food

May 6, 2014 10 By EngineerMommy

I’ve written about DIY felt lollipops and DIY felt cookies recently. Today I thought I’d share with you a tutorial for making felt cupcakes. This post will teach you how to make four different types of felt cupcakes. It’s a lot of fun to whip together these cute little cupcakes. They’re so adorable and so delicious-looking, you will have to restrain yourself from eating them all up! 😉 Best part? They have zero calories!

Your little one will love to play with these miniature confections. Why not make a dozen of these and let your child open up her own bakery? Or your child can savor these cupcakes during a pretend tea party! These are so lovely, you may want to make one to display in your kitchen, too. The possibilities are endless. Let’s get to the tutorial, shall we?

Felt cupcakes: DIY play food

Let’s start with the following picture, which labels each of the four cupcakes, as well as the elements that make up each cupcake.

Cupcake #1: Rolled base & Twisted icing top (see the picture below as a guide)

Rolled base tutorial:

  • Cut two long strips of felt, each about 7 inches by 4 inches.
  • Fold each lengthwise.
  • Roll up the felt of the two strips, pushing up from the bottom in the center. Secure with hot glue.

Twisted icing top tutorial:

  •  Cut a long, thin strip of felt, about 12 inches by 1 inch.
  • Place it on top of the cupcake in a spiral pattern, while twisting the felt. This will form a twisted icing top.

Cupcake #2: Stuffed base & Flower overlap top (see the picture below as a guide)

Stuffed base tutorial:

  • Cut two circles, one about 2 inches in diameter and the other about 4 inches.
  • Cut an arc shape about 2 inches wide with 4 inches along the larger arc.
  • Sew the smaller circle to the inner circumference of the arc. Sew the seam between the two ends of the arc.
  • Sew about 70% of the larger circle to the outer circumference of the arc. Fill with padding or cotton balls or scrunched up paper. Finish sewing the remainder of the larger circle.

Flower overlap top tutorial:

  • Cut 5 flower shapes of increasing size.
  • Place them on top of the cupcake in order of decreasing size. Secure with hot glue.
  • Top with red pom pom.

Cupcake #3: Rolled base & Star top (see the picture below as a guide)

Whipped top tutorial:

  • Cut out circle out of white felt. Sew small lines with multi-colored thread to form sprinkles.
  • Secure onto top of cupcake with hot glue.
  • Cut out multi-pointed flower shape and cut out of felt.
  • Sew the flower closed into a dollop shape by sewing each of the petals together along the edges. Keep moving until you have finished about 70% of the edges. Then stuff with padding and complete the remaining edges.
  • Cut out two more small circles from felt and top the cupcake with those.

Enjoy these yummy felt cupcakes!
