DIY pretty labels for my organizational drawers

September 18, 2014 2 By EngineerMommy

I love to label things! It makes me feel organized to have every thing in its place, and to have labels on those places. Even better when those labels are pretty!

I’ve had two sets of plastic white drawers (like this one) in our front coat closet for a while now. I found that it was a good place to store various crafts, papers, stickers, extra hardware, basic tools, etc. I used to have all my scrapbook supplies and all my tools & hardware sealed up in huge plastic bins, but it was a huge pain to get what I needed easily. I would have to un-stack multiple, heavy bins to get to the bin I needed and then I had to sort through the desired bin to find the screwdriver I needed or the alphabet stickers I needed. It was not convenient and I found a much better way of organizing my space!

Now I have six drawers that hold various supplies and tools that I use most often. So when I need the hammer, I go to the dedicated drawer with basic tools. When I need the picture hanger hardware, I go to the dedicated drawer with basic hardware supplies. When I need my washi tape, I go to the drawer with scrapbook stickers / tapes. It’s a perfect system for me- and it has made my space so much more functional!

Now I wanted to label the drawers, so in case my well-meaning husband wants to put something back in one of the drawers, he will immediately know that the screw set goes in the “Hardware” drawer! Or at the very least, I can always question him after the fact to find out why he didn’t pay attention to the labels! 😉

The labels I chose are Glue, Fabric, Stickers, Tools, Hardware and Paint.

I found these black & white damask labels in the Clearance aisle at Hobby Lobby- lots of undiscovered gems there, if ya ask me! It’s basically just a thick cardstock with a pretty patterned print and it’s cut into the shape of a label. Lovely! I needed a tape that would complement that label, and I didn’t want one that was too matchy-matchy. I settled on this pretty glittery gold washi tape from my vast washi tape collection. I think they go together well!

Then I simply wrote directly on the label with a Metallic Silver marker. Now, the words do not stand out dramatically with the pattern on the label and the sheerness of the marker, but I like it that way. When the labels are on the drawers, it looks more uniform.

But I can still easily read the words on the label. See?

I simply ripped a short piece of the washi tape to adhere the label to the front of the drawer. Simple and fast! The whole project took me about 5 minutes. Perfect for me when I have a teething baby and a needy toddler hanging on my legs!

Happy labeling fellow crafters!
