Cheap DIY Project: Framed Chalkboard Family Message Board

November 8, 2011 6 By EngineerMommy

I have always been a fan of chalkboards as a household message board. You can jot down notes, wipe them off, and repeat! Most chalkboards in the marketplace are too big & industrial-looking for my taste.

I wanted something small (so my kitchen doesn’t look like Mr. Kessler’s history class), something cute (so it matches the rest of my decor 🙂 ), and something affordable (I heart a bargain! ).

So I headed over to Home Goods and found the individual components to my project.

I purchased adhesive chalkboard sheets and although the package suggested sticking these onto a cabinet door, I knew that was not the look I was going for. I looked around the store for some pretty frames and found this one that I think complements my kitchen color palette nicely. Helpful tip: find a frame with a thick frame to rest your chalk on (see later pictures for example)!

So the next step I did was cut out the the chalkboard sheet into the exact measurements of the picture frame.

The final step was to simply adhere the chalkboard sheet to the front of the glass in the picture frame. Make sure your size measurements & cutting are exact here. This is the finished product up on the wall near my coffee maker.

And since it is a picture frame, here it is in the corner of the countertop. I like it here. I think I’ll leave it here.

The frame and chalkboard sheet together cost me under $15- affordable & chic!
